This Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Learn foldforming and the art of patinas with award-winning metal artist and blacksmith, Pat Downing. In this all-day class, students will learn about safety, tools, and the basic methods of both foldforming and patinas. The class will consist of 3 hours of forming techniques and 3 hours focusing on patinas, with a one-hour lunch break. This is a hands-on techniques class designed to show how one can achieve folds and then apply patinas to finished pieces. In this class, students will work in copper, but the methods taught can be used in almost any metal and size, from jewelry to public art. What to bring: BYF (bring your favorite) hammer & safety glasses, if you have them. If not, you can borrow from ours. Students are welcome to bring a lunch to eat at the studio or nearby, or may purchase lunch nearby (there are many options in Liberty Station). Materials fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class and includes copper and patinas. This class is appropriate for ages 18 years and older. No prior experience necessary. Join a panel of scientific and artistic thinkers for a deep look at the roles of fungi on the planet and microscopic elements within complex systems. The visiting Treseder Lab of UC Irvine examines fungi’s layered relationship to planetary life and discusses how fungi mediate and connect distant ecosystems. David Familian introduces life webs and AI as complex systems, a topic that comes to focus in the art exhibition, "Future Tense: Art, Complexity, and Uncertainty." Artists in residence with the Beall Center’s Black Box Projects working with the Treseder Lab, art collective Cesar & Lois introduce their ecosystem-based artwork that articulates fungal respiration and bioelectric signaling. Moving across perspectives in art and science, the panelists reframe how we picture the planet. Scientists from The Treseder Lab include Dr. Kathleen Treseder and researchers Eduardo Misael Choreno Parra and Melanie Taleen Hacopian. David Familian is artistic director of Beall Center for Art + Technology at UC Irvine. CSUSM Professor Lucy HG Solomon and Brazil-based Professor at UNICAMP Cesar Baio make up art collective Cesar & Lois.

It features unpublished footage of performances by Nina Simone, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, and Gladys Knight & the Pips at Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park).

This group exhibition showcases recent works by the talented faculty and staff of the Fine Art department. The artwork on display highlights the creativity and dedication of instructors and staff, who find the time to pursue their studio practice. The exhibit includes an array of traditional and contemporary media, such as painting, photography, installation, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, and more.
