  • MandoBasso is a duo featuring Gunnar Biggs on bass and Bill Bradbury on mandolin. Their original music is influenced by traditional American and Celtic music, classical music, and jazz. For this evening’s concert they will “lean into” the Celtic origins of their own music as well as share some traditional Irish and Scottish music played in a new light. Gunnar and Bill came together as colleagues working on projects at Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos. Gunnar comes from a strong background in jazz and classical performance, Bill from a composition and computer music background. Their mutual love of Irish and traditional American music brought them together in this unusual pairing of mandolin and bass. MandoBasso performances include mainly new compositions, along with arrangements of traditional music, classical music, jazz, and ragtime. Gunnar Biggs is a Southern California bassist and music educator. He is active in many genres of musical performance including jazz, Latin, classical, world, and experimental. Recently retired from San Diego State University after twenty-five years as Instructor of Double Bass and as Director of Jazz Ensembles at Palomar Community College, Gunnar continues to maintain a thriving private teaching practice. Bill Bradbury is Emeritus Professor of Music and Music Technology in the Music Department at California State University, San Marcos. His creative activities include compositions for orchestra, chamber ensembles, soloists, and electronic media and computer-based multimedia collaborations with other artists. Bradbury has also written musical scores for theatre productions and films including Anza Borrego: Seasons in the Desert, for which he received an Emmy Award for composing and arranging. mandobasso.com San Diego Folk Heritage on Facebook / Instagram

  • From the museum: Local artist Carlo Miranda (Filipino-American, b. 1988) showcases ten recent paintings in this intimate exhibition. Miranda’s works were first exhibited in this museum in 2020 as part of a display responding to the pandemic. Working as a registered nurse in San Diego during this time had a profound impact on his use of painting as a way to channel psychological introspection, anxiety, and empathy. Miranda clarifies: “In my experience as an RN, I have developed a greater understanding of the human condition. I meet people on what could be the worst day of their lives and there’s a sense of honesty that filters through that. My biggest takeaway from my ten years as an RN is the impermanence of health and life. So I believe that we must live our lives with purpose, however big or small that may be, and that kindness goes a very long way.” These intimate and hyperrealistic portraits, painted in oil on panel, depict those closest to the artist: his family, his friends, his barber. Together they highlight a vibrant community. Largely self-taught, Miranda works in meticulous detail from photographs of his subjects in his North Park studio. “Sonder” is a term coined by author John Koenig, meaning “the profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one’s own, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it. Each subject has their own story, their own dreams and desires and worries.” For Miranda, this means viewers may develop an empathy toward his subjects or even construct imaginary stories of their lives. • We are pleased to present "FORTUNE & FATE," an art show interrogating luck, destiny and providence hosted by Distinction Gallery. Do we control our futures? Are we the playthings or authors of fate? Our artists confront all such questions and more this March, in a showcase of paintings, drawings and mixed media pieces. Some have thought about luck as a subject matter, an arbitrary force external to people, places and things. Others have catechized fate via material qualities, following in the footsteps of expressionism. While all of our members are professional artists with countless corporate clients, all works on show have been independently created - purely through the auspices of imagination. Luck is illustrated by different cultures in different ways, from shamrocks to horseshoes to koi. Though not all of our members trade in symbology, we have such a variety of origins that visitors are apt to experience a world tour of perspectives in a single show. Original artworks and limited edition prints will be available, the opening reception is March 11 from 6-10 p.m. Divergence Art Collective was formed in 2022 with the aim of conducting themed group shows for collectors and artists. In a landscape of sameness and disposability, we value craftsmanship and the outré. Our artists have a wide variety of inspirations, from pop culture to literature, folklore and the natural world. While we are all from different backgrounds, we share the idiom of visual art and believe in executing it to a standard worthy of the form. Visitors are provided with an experience of techniques, aesthetics and subjects as varied as ourselves. As a collective, we are focused on presenting themed shows with an atmosphere both unique and unified. The shows are carefully curated by the artists themselves. - Divergence Art Collective. With live music from 7-9 p.m. by Mathew Gose! Show on view through March 11 - April 4 at Distinction Gallery Divergence Collective on Instagram
