The Olaf Wieghorst Museum presents Larry Maurice – the Cowboy Entertainer – for a one man show on September 12, 2026 in Downtown El Cajon. Rarely in Southern California, Larry brings his classic frontier humor to a contemporary audience. Much like 19th-century humorist Mark Twain, Larry Maurice uses storytelling, verse, and oral history to preserve the culture of the American West. Using minimalist staging, Larry’s personal charisma, vocal modulation, and timing to holds his audience. His stories of the Old West blend historical education with entertainment. Beyond the stage, Larry has been an author, a poet, a rodeo announcer, a master of ceremonies and a historical advocate. He was named Cowboy Poet of the Year and received the American Cowboy Culture Award. You have heard him at the Lone Pine Film Festival, the Autry Museum and on television specials for the FOX network. He can recite cowboy poetry and share historical anecdotes with the best entertainers of the Century. Join us for a delightful evening as Larry brings the old west to life. At Oceanside Museum of Art’s Summer Art Camp, kids get to spend their days making art, exploring ideas, and learning from our Gallery Educators in a welcoming Museum setting. June 15–19, 2026 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. June 22–26, 2026 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. While both weeks visit the same exhibitions and explore similar big ideas, no two weeks are the same! Projects, subjects, and materials shift each week, so returning campers will enjoy fresh challenges. This allows returning campers to deepen their skills while creating entirely new artwork! What to Expect Campers will learn foundational art skills like drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting, and mixed media while also building confidence, problem-solving skills, and creative independence. Activities include drawing cartoons with a professional cartoon artist, designing and building cardboard “automatic machines” inspired by the "Aaron Kramer: Sense of Wonder" exhibition, creating custom prints on tote bags inspired by the "Matrix Multipled: Hybrid Approaches to Printmaking" exhibition, plein air watercolor painting, collaborative mural-making, beach sketching, mixed media collage, and more. Beyond art techniques, campers practice observation, creative thinking, collaboration, and expressing their ideas visually. OMA's galleries are our inspiration labs, and every project encourages experimentation and trying something new (there’s no “right way” here!) Each day includes a walk to the Oceanside Public Library (OPL) where free lunch is provided by the Lunch at the Library program if needed, otherwise kids can bring their lunch from home. Join artist José Huge Sánchez Jiménez, featured in the "Matrix Multiplied: Hybrid Approaches to Printmaking" exhibition at OMA, for a hands-on workshop exploring the art of sculpture, community, and printmaking. In this session, José will guide you in creating your own handheld three-dimensional bee, inspired by the monumental bee featured in his exhibition piece. Learn about the interconnectedness of the hive as José shares the symbolism behind his work, and receive expert guidance on carving and adorning your bee. In the exhibition, José’s giant bee also functions as a printmaking tool; carved, inked, and used to create unique prints. You’ll explore these same techniques in miniature, gaining insight into how sculpture and printmaking can merge. All materials are provided. The Art Glass Guild located in the Village Arts Center in Spanish Village at Balboa Park will be hosting their Fall Patio Show and Sale on the weekend of October 10 and 11. The patio and Studio 25 will be filled with local San Diego glass artists. See beautiful art representing many techniques, including blown, fused, torch, stained, cast, etched and mosaic art. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals Matt Gill - Clarinet Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ART HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians.
