Wednesdays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. January 8–March 5 (9 weeks, 27 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio In this class we will sculpt a full figure from the life model. Students will have eight weeks to build an armature, learn basic figure proportions and structure, and sculpt an entire figure from head to toe. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the skeleton and basic anatomy, and how to depict the illusion of weight. Regular instructor demonstrations and discussions of technique will be given. Kevin Inman Wednesday, April 2 from 2–5 p.m. (1 day, 3 total hours of instruction) On location in Balboa Park This plein air painting class is taught on location in beautiful San Diego. Paint the peaceful oasis of the Alcazar Garden, a formal garden with seasonal plantings in San Diego’s beautiful Balboa Park. Painting outdoors gives the artist the opportunity to experiment with light, color, and atmosphere. Work with San Diego landscape painter Kevin Inman to learn how to paint spontaneously, simplify a complex subject, and enjoy the moment. Topics include color mixing, design, and how to let go of your inner critic. Materials: Recommended oil or acrylic colors (Gamblin and Rembrandt paints): Limited palette: Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. This palette saves money but limits your options in advanced painting techniques. Basic palette: Cadmium Yellow Medium (or Hue), Cadmium Yellow Deep (or Hue), Cadmium Red Medium (or Hue), Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Titanium White, Burnt Umber, or preferred alternatives. Recommended but optional palette: Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre. Brushes: a range of brushes from #2 on up. I prefer hog bristle flats and filberts. Other: cup or jar for solvent; paper towels; palette or paper palette pad; Gamsol or Turpenoid; linseed oil or Gamblin Solvent-free Gel; sketchbook; pencil; vine charcoal; palette knife; gloves; travel easel or pochade box; hat and sunscreen. Supports: stack of inexpensive materials for quick studies and exercises, such as a five-pack of Blick canvas boards, size 8” x 10” or 11” x 14”, an Arches oil paper pad, or a canvas pad. Union Hall Gallery Presents “Touchpoints with Artists: Darby Haily, Alex Parrasch, Andie Ryan Round, Emma Limtiaco, John Dewey, Sara Ajami, Sarah Stevenson February 7, 2025 - March 21, 2025 Opening Reception: Friday, February 7, 2025 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. During the opening reception, several of the artists will speak about their personal practice and the insights gained from creating collaborative work. The exhibition ’Touchpoints’, highlights the transformative potential of collaborative art making as explored through the student-led seminar "DISCO", created and facilitated by MFA candidate Darby Simmons at Claremont Graduate University. In this seminar, artists initiated individual artworks and passed them to fellow participants, with each piece evolving through the contributions of the group. The result is a dynamic collection of works embodying shared creative processes, innovation, and collective imagination. To complement these collaborative pieces, the exhibition will also feature one individual work from each artist, providing insight into their personal practices and sparking dialogue on the interplay between individual and collective creation. World Kamishibai Forum February 15-16, 2025 A Free Event for educators, Librarians, storytellers, Kamishibai fans and the Kamishibai curious! The World Kamishibai Forum will bring together and celebrate the diversity of Kamishibai performance styles from around the world. Librarians, teachers and storytellers will have the opportunity to learn from internationally recognized Kamishibai experts. The two days will encompass “How to” workshops and Kamishibai storytelling and presentations. Attendees will experience how Kamishibai inspires and teaches children to love storytelling and literature. Kamishibai is a traditional Japanese storytelling and performance art that uses illustrated paper cards and a narrator. The word kamishibai literally translates to "paper theater" in Japanese. Kamishibai (Storybox) brings international folk tales and other stories to life for people, from toddlers to teens and beyond.
