  • Nancy Savoca’s star-studded indie gem is a chronicle of a spirited Italian-American New York family that perfectly balances humor, tragedy, and pathos. Joseph Santangelo (Vincent D’Onofrio) is a butcher with a wicked sense of humor who “wins” his wife Catherine (a stellar Tracey Ullman) in a pinochle game. Over the protests of his mother (Judith Malina) who talks to ghosts and makes deals with saints, Joseph marries Catherine. When the old lady dies, her spirit is channeled into her granddaughter Teresa who overtakes the film with her yearning to serve God. Perfectly embodying a modern-day Bernadette, Lili Taylor imbues Teresa with a mix of dedicated innocence and naïveté. Executive produced by Jonathan Demme, with memorable performances from Michael Imperioli, Michael Rispoli and Victor Argo, Household Saints showcases a unique voice in 1990s independent filmmaking. Household Saints has been digitally restored and remastered by Lightbox Film Center at University of the Arts (Philadelphia) in collaboration with Milestone Films with support from Ron and Suzanne Naples. Restoration Supervisor: Ross Lipman, Corpus Fluxus. Picture Restoration: Illuminate Hollywood. Sound Restoration: Audio Mechanics. • Lori Bell makes her debut at Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 147TH Session of Dim Sum & Jazz! Seating begins at 6p.m. and music starts from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations! About Lori Bell | Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. Bell plays with confidence and taste, with a proclivity toward the more subtle means of emotional expression. Her playing inherently has a many-layered depth that reveals a more meaningful art. She renders ballads with exceptional sensitivity while bringing wonderful nuances to swing and be-bop, which she plays with power, agility and a natural élan. Her phrasing, evocative of birds, shows the strong influence of Eric Dolphy, yet is rendered with such purity of tone and range of timbre that it is clearly of a different ornithology. Lori Bell is a three time Global Music Award recipient recognized for her recordings, compositions, and arrangements. Like Dim Sum & Jazz? Check out the rest of the schedule here!

  • Many people lose income when they become caregivers for a family member. Some even end up losing their home.
  • Consider how the body is present through its absence in art by creating a papier mâché mask. We will draw inspiration from Eleanor Antin’s "100 Boots" (1971-1973), the poignant photographic novel with an intriguing journey; David Hammons "Champ" (1989), which highlights the precariousness of success; and My Barbarian’s "Universal Declaration of Infantile Anxiety Situations Reflected in the Creative Impulse" (2013), which incorporates handmade masks, props, and costumes into live performances and video performances. "Reflections" is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. Session 3: November 10 & November 17 In this workshop series participants will explore how ideas about the body integrate into contemporary art. Through close looking, we will engage with artworks where the body is present, and where its notable absence invokes the body. Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Transportation will be provided, if required. Participants may join one session (two days) or more!

  • With the intention to support meaningful exchange between the San Diego and Bay Area arts communities, DISCO RIOT and FACT/SF are pleased to present a shared evening of work, alongside other opportunities for creative exchange. FACT/SF initiated their PORT (Peer Organized Reciprocal Touring) model in 2017 with the ultimate aim to cultivate an open platform where any choreographer can match with another choreographer to embark on reciprocal touring. PORT: DISCO RIOT + FACT/SF was initiated in Summer 2022, when DISCO RIOT ventured to San Francisco to share a program with FACT/SF at ODC Theater. Now, FACT/SF journeys to San Diego to bring the reciprocal touring model full circle. In addition to the performance the artists will engage in post show talk-backs, and Charles Slender-White will offer a 3-day Countertechnique workshop for the greater San Diego dance community. DISCO RIOT is excited to host this performance event at their new performance space at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Downtown. As part of a strategic shift announced earlier this year, MCASD is working with DISCO RIOT and Blindspot Collective to develop a multi-disciplinary arts hub for local artists, and PORT: DISCO RIOT + FACT/SF is one of the first opportunities to experience performance in this new venue. $15 for artists/students, and $25 for the general public.
