  • “Stories From Home” is a series of dances embodying the oral traditions of Nuevomexicano, Chicano and Mexican American communities in the American Southwest. Choreographer Yvonne Montoya and a diverse cast of dancers draw upon personal histories as well as stories of ancestral knowledge. “Stories From Home” is a vessel for personal and specific tales, while also offering a broader look at various cultural traditions throughout the Southwest. The work addresses themes such as the Bracero Program, the creation of the atomic bomb in Northern New Mexico and illness related to U.S. government projects, the loss of language because of 1940s Americanization programs, the experience of the Sephardim people during and after the Spanish Inquisition, family, love and querencia. An artist meet-and-greet will take place March 10 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Cross Cultural Center.   • Learn the Art of Intarsia Woodworking! Sunday, August 9, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 5-hour intarsia woodworking workshop! Intarsia is a woodworking technique that involves the use of varied shapes of wood to create an image or pattern. In this class, we will cover shop safety and how to use a scroll saw, as well as best practices for sanding and finishing. Students will choose from a template to transfer to their wood, creating a mosaic-like decorative wall piece. Template options will be provided, and may be altered and edited based on skill level. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with their own intarsia project. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron, but we have some for borrow if needed. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome.
