"Make a Joyful Noize (MAJN)" is a multimedia experience that blends music, film, and movement to capture the visceral and contagious energy of Black joy. Joy gives us a reason to live, even when it seems life has forsaken us. Black joy is entertainment, therapy, self-love, and salvation. It is the thing that allows us to still laugh and love. Soul Science Lab (SSL) is a music and multimedia duo powered by Chen Lo and Asante Amin. The two are storytellers who inspire the future with hip hop, jazz, soul and stunning visuals installations. The duo’s current projects include "Soundtrack ’63," "Make a Joyful Noize" (commissioned by Carnegie Hall), and "The Renaissance Mixtape" (commissioned by the Apollo Theater). SSL has released three studio albums: "Footprints," "The Visitor: Alter Destiny," and "Plan for Paradise." This Diwali, join us for a hands-on craft workshop where we will paint and decorate beautiful Jharokha-style candle holders using sustainable materials, led by Dipali Dewan of OTB Handmadecrafts. A Jharokha is a distinctive architectural feature of Indian palaces and havelis—an ornate overhanging window or balcony that allowed royalty to view festivities while remaining unseen. Beyond their practical use, Jharokhas became a symbol of beauty, artistry, and craftsmanship in Indian culture. Their intricate designs often featured arches, carvings, and vibrant colors, reflecting the grandeur of India’s architectural heritage. In this workshop, we will bring that same sense of tradition and artistry into our craft. Each participant will create their own candle holder inspired by the Jharokha design—perfect for celebrating the Festival of Lights. Whether you are new to Indian culture or simply enjoy exploring creative crafts, this workshop is a wonderful way to experience the spirit of Diwali while making something beautiful to take home. All materials will be provided. No prior art experience required—just bring your creativity! This program is for adults over the age of 18. Space is limited, registration is recommended. On Sunday, February 16, 2025 mycophiles, educators, chefs, supportive businesses and dedicated mushroom amateurs, enthusiasts and professionals will gather at our Annual Fungus Fair in San Diego’s Balboa Park, continuing our mission to help educate our community, exchanging knowledge and celebrating all things fungi. The San Diego Mycological Society was established in 1997 and our group gathers for the many facets of fungi such as culinary, cultivation, identification, photography and art, ecology and more. We have monthly seminars, conduct classes, lead forays to find mushrooms, assist in mushroom identification, and share joy in commensality at member potlucks and chef prepared full course mushroom dinners.
