This special event will feature a moderated conversation with Academy Award-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins, known for "1917," "Blade Runner 2049," and "The Shawshank Redemption." The day will also showcase a contemporary dance piece by Milana Aernova, live musical performance by Joe Devito, and a premiere of an original short film directed by Bárbara Perrín Rivema. Each performance highlights the fusion of art forms, providing attendees with a rare opportunity to engage with visionary artists across multiple disciplines. Roger Deakins will share insights into his acclaimed cinematography and the art of visual storytelling, drawing from decades of landmark films, and will offer an early release of his book "Reflections." Milana Aernova’s dance piece explores the intersection of movement, emotion, and visual design, while Joe Devito’s live music underscores the performances, creating an immersive sonic environment. Bárbara Perrín Rivema’s original short film completes the day, demonstrating innovative cinematic storytelling and artistic expression. We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we honor the rich traditions and share in the experience of Día de los Muertos on Sunday, November 2 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station located in Point Loma! Rooted in community, family, and remembrance, this event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. Through music, art, hands-on and interactive activities, we invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly gathering designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community. We’ll be decorating calavera (skull) cookies in the morning. Then, we’ll enjoy music making and festivities before a procession set to begin at 2 p.m. Join us as we walk together through the Dorothea Laub and Dance Place Buildings. We’ll enjoy the art, music making, and handmade shrines made by local community members and students! Festivities and open house will run until 5 p.m. Specific activities will be available only as long as supplies last. We hope to see you and your loved ones there! Join us at Songbirds Music on Saturday, November 1 from 2-4 p.m., for a family-friendly afternoon of fun! We’ll celebrate Día de los Muertos together with a family music class hosted by Songbirds Music, followed by story time and fun all-ages crafts by San Diego Craft Collective. We’ll work together to create tissue paper flowers, and for the littlest of hands, we’ll be making yarn balls. Finally, we’ll have a light snack and be guided in fun movements with Liliana Ibarra Patoja. This event is recommended for families with children ages 0-8 years and their loving grownups. Parent participation is required. This event is hosted by and will be held at Songbirds Music, in collaboration with San Diego Craft Collective. Songbirds Music is located in the Dance Place Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station.
