In this six-week course, students will explore the fundamentals of sculpture and design while working hands-on with clay. Students will learn how to transform a lump of clay into a variety of forms, culminating in a final project that showcases their skills. Ceramics offers a multi-sensory learning experience that supports different learning styles and encourages problem-solving, fine motor development, and confidence through experimentation and revision. The opening reception will start at 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is free along with a food ticket if you RSVP beforehand. Artist Statement: Macedonio Arteaga Jr. is a visionary artist, educator, and community leader whose work bridges cultural heritage, social justice, and artistic expression. As the founder and artistic director of Teatro Izcalli, a Chicano comedy troupe, Macedonio uses humor and storytelling to challenge stereotypes, amplify underrepresented voices, and foster cultural pride. His creative work extends beyond the stage, with published plays and poetry that inspire new generations to find their own artistic voices. Through decades of dedicated service, Macedonio has brought the transformative power of the arts to underserved communities. He has served as an Artist-in-Residence at the Sherman Heights Community Center and the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, creating opportunities for others to engage with and grow through the arts. His initiatives, such as “Círculo de Hombres,” have addressed critical social issues like violence prevention, mentorship, and cultural awareness in schools. Recognized with prestigious honors, including the California Arts Council Legacy Artist Award in 2021, Macedonio’s contributions to the arts and culture are now celebrated at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, which is proud to host his first museum art installation. Enchantment for the family awaits you at the theatre in many sizes and shapes of marionettes—almost life-size bears—cavorting and skating. The San Diego Guild of Puppetry presents Kathy Felker in this one-woman show populated by puppet versions of favorite characters—Clara, The Nutcracker, the formidable Mouse King, and Clara's benevolent Uncle Drosselmeyer, a large hand-and-rod puppet who watches over all the dreams and drama to Tchaikovsky's renown score. This presentation addresses the difficult decisions we face when sorting through a lifetime of possessions, especially when adult children may not want the items we've treasured. You'll discover the important distinction between decluttering and organizing, learn about community resources available to help, and understand how changes in today's resale market affect the value and disposition of our belongings. Join us for an honest conversation about taking control of our possessions rather than letting them control us. Learn some basic sewing skills to mend your clothes. Instructors from the Visions Museum of Textile Art will teach you how to sew on a button, repair a hole or a tear in a shirt or sweater. Bring an item of clothing you would like to mend, and we will show you how fix it or patch it. You may also learn how to make and attach a creative decorative patch or embellishment to your, shirt, jacket or jeans. You may also practice sewing a button onto a heart or star shape and learn some basic sewing stitches to make a simple gift ornament. Supplies will be provided. Event is open to ages 12-18.
