As Part of the Far South Border North Grant Katie Ruiz, The founder of the Pompom Project engaged the community throughout the city of San Diego in Craft making- Pompom workshops. Ruiz's ongoing Pompom Project engages diverse communities in a collaborative creative process. The experience of coming together to create with one's hands and working towards a shared goal promotes investment and pride in community and shared spaces. Through the communal act of making, strangers come together to work for a common goal resulting in relationship building and community care. Hundreds of participants produced over 1000 pompoms during 8 public workshops over the last four months. The free workshops offered lessons on "Craftivism" a term coined by Betsy Greer in 2003 which refers to craft and activism coming together through art. The Pompoms have been installed in two locations; Sew Loka, a textile store in Logan Heights that focuses on slow fashion and community building, and Villa Merced, senior community room, a branch of Casa Familiar. Sew Loka comprises partners Claudia Biezunski Rodriguez and Manny Biezunski, both of whom are artist. Claudia makes one of one clothing items from recycled and reclaimed materials. Manny is a videographer and marketing person who created a documentary of the pompom project FBSN grant process. The reveal of the public facing art installation and the documentary will be on view at the reception on May 25, 2024 from 12 - 6 p.m. During the reception you are invited to view the new Pompom installation, watch the documentary of the process, make your own pompom, and view one of a kind Sew Loka fashions. The California Festival takes place Nov. 3-19 across the state, with dozens of distinct performances throughout San Diego spotlighting new musical compositions written in the last five years.

During our Chocolate Making Classes you will learn, create, eat and laugh! We offer chocolate making classes for adults and children 5 years and older*. Our hands-on chocolate making classes are about 1 ½- 2 hours long and limited to 10 students (or 10 child/ parent teams). There you will learn the basics of working with chocolate, create your own bark, molded chocolates and more. During class, students will play with favorite flavors like salted caramel and peanut butter cup and select monthly themed flavors made by chocolatier Michelle Lomelin. Students will also select from more than two dozen ingredients as they personalize a chocolate bark – with favorite flavors including freeze dried fruits and savory pretzels, potato chips and a wide selection of nuts. Plus, you will get to keep all your creations! Our chocolate making classes are offered one Saturday a month and each month has its own theme. This month we celebrate all things citrus! A San Diego sport fishing tradition, The Port Of San Diego’s Day At The Docks is the West Coast’s largest public celebration of sport fishing. Signaling the official start of Southern California’s spring saltwater fishing season, Day At The Docks takes place on Sunday, April 13, 2025 against the colorful and dynamic backdrop of world renown sport fishing fleet on San Diego Bay. Fishing Seminars: The serious fisherman can explore the latest fishing tackle presented by the industry’s leading manufacturers. Historical displays underscore how far saltwater tackle design has come. How-to seminars by expert fishermen reveal secrets on improving both technique and results. Kids Fishing Adventure: Sponsored by Okuma Fishing Tackle & Everingham Bros Bait Company. From 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. For kids 4-12 years old. The Kid’s Fishing Adventure is made up of areas set aside and stocked with fish, providing kids with the chance wet a line and make a catch. If you have never cast a line in your life, don’t worry. This competition is for everyone, pro and novice alike. Competition is set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Points are awarded for distance and accuracy. Izorline Knot Tying Competition: Young and old alike can try their hand at tying the strongest fishing knot with assistance from the pro staff at Izorline. Knot tying demonstrations will be followed by hands-on competition in which individual knots will be tested against the Izorline Knot Gauge, a device that measures a knot’s breaking point by pressure. Competition will take place in three divisions: Small fry (up to 10 years old), Juniors (11-16 years old) and Adults. A voluntary donation of $1-5 to enter the competition will benefit the Friends of Rollo a non-profit organization that takes kids fishing. The contest runs all day at the Izorline exhibit booth. Winners in each division will be announced at the end of the day. Prizes include ½ day and full day fishing trips. Fishing Videos: Look inside the Sportfishing Landings for continuous showings of dramatic sportfishing videos. Boat Rides Around the Bay: Boat Rides Around BayThe whole family will want to take a boat ride around San Diego Bay and it only costs $4. An evening with Mr. Poe and Other Authors of the Macabre WRITE OUT LOUD, an organization founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud for audiences of all ages, announces “Poe and His Progeny,” at the Villa Montezuma Museum in Sherman Heights. This historic Queen Anne Victorian was named “The Palace of the Arts," by Jessie Shepard, the musician, spiritualist and author who designed it in 1887. Performances will take place on October 25, 26, 31 and November 1. There are three performances each evening at 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are $30.
