We will provide a wooden box and all the images and materials for decorating it in the Mexican tradition. Nicho can be made to Frida, Guadalupe or Loteria. Resembling dioramas, they are made from common household objects and craft material and traditionally combine elements from mestizo spirituality, and popular culture. San Diego Public Library presents Nuestra Cultura, a series celebrating and recognizing the rich heritage, history, contributions, and culture of our Latin American and Indigenous communities. We recognize that there is deeply rooted pride in heritage and that self-identities are important, unique, and may change over time. "In the Name of Duration" features Marcos Duran / Moving Works, Eric Geiger, Emily Aust, Victor De La Fuente, and Friends. The collective will enter extended performance galleries, experimenting with time, physical endurance, mental agility, and public engagement. The public is welcome to move around the performers as if in an art museum, and may enter and exit the theater as often as they need. The experience is 3 hours long from start to finish. Join us on Friday, July 26 at Normal Heights United as Songwriter Sanctuary continues a stellar summer lineup featuring the finest songwriters in San Diego. This month, Aaron Bowen, Angel René Wilson, and Francis Blume will share original music performed in a Nashville-style round hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley. A full-time honors English major and law student at San Diego Mesa College, Angel René Wilson balances rigorous academics with his roles as a performer, writer, and founder of MARTYR, a local music and arts production company. He is currently working on his debut album, a book, and a short film, all set for release in 2025, while planning to transfer to UCLA in the fall. Aaron Bowen, a Southern California native, blends acoustic jazz and folk with a European flair, evoking Django Reinhardt and Paul Simon. With four generations of musicians in his family, Aaron's decade-long career as a songwriter and producer has flourished. Besides performing and producing, he builds unique electric guitars, inspired by his mentor at High Spirit Guitars in San Diego. Aaron's mission is to create and share authentic music and instruments, inspiring others to be true to themselves. Francis Blume, a singer/songwriter from Vista, CA, crafts a vintage sound that transports listeners to a nostalgic era. Drawing inspiration from icons like Roy Orbison and Elvis, his music blends heartfelt emotion with the charm of the 1950s and 60s. Known for his crooning style and evocative performances, Blume captures the essence of a bygone time, offering a refreshing and timeless musical experience. It is very fitting to end the series by focusing on the work of Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, the San Diego native who recently passed away. He worked with both Sim Bruce Richards and Frederick Liebhardt before going on to design some of the region’s most dramatic buildings. About the presenters: Presenters include Dr. Mark Hargreaves, Rector of St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla, Hallie Swenson an architectural designer in San Diego, Keith York, an architectural writer and real estate agent specializing in architect designed homes, and independent curator Dave Hampton. Hargreaves, author of "The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill." (2023), was inspired by a lifelong interest in the visual arts to complete a master's degree at The National Gallery and King's College in London on the topic of Christianity and the arts. Since moving to San Diego, he has had a keen interest in capturing the architectural history of San Diego. Hallie Swenson studied traditional architecture and urbanism in England at University of Buckingham, the architectural history of England at the University of Cambridge, King's College, and Roman architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Rome. She contributed an essay to Clive Aslet’s book The Academy, which celebrates the work of renowned traditionalist architect John Simpson. Dave Hampton is an independent curator focused on San Diego’s postwar art and architecture community. His book, "San Diego's Craft Revolution," accompanied a 2011 exhibition at Mingei International Museum as part of the first Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time initiative. Dave and Gayle Kauihou live in Ken Kellogg’s 1967 Ledbetter residence. Tickets: $16/21 The lecture will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library.
