From his early days in Leiden until his death in Amsterdam at the height of his career, Metsu painted a remarkable range of history paintings, portraits, still lifes, but above all, exquisite genre paintings like the Timken Museum of Art's Portrait of a Girl Receiving a Letter. This docent-led talk will explore the life and work of this remarkable artist who was one of the leading genre painters of his time.   • From the organizers: Join residents of City Heights in celebrating the 25th annual El Dia de Muertos. Featuring 35 altares created by residents, a day filled with cultural entertainment including the Old Globe's theatre project with residents performing. From Azteca dancers to Ballet Folklorico, masked Chinelo dancers and Banda Estrella de San Diego, there is something for everyone. All are invited to create paper masks with San Diego guild of Puppetry, try their hand at drumming and parading with Drummers Without Borders, and join the Fun Zone for bouncy jump houses and more. The outdoor atmosphere is super-charged with the exhibit of twenty colorful, innovative low-rider cars provided by the Dead End Car Club. Stop by, you may be lucky enough to snag a ride!
  • Prepare for the pet pawty of the season as TrustedHousesitters and The Animal Pad partner together to host Howl-O-Ween on Saturday, October 22! From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Amici Amphitheater in Little Italy, attendees and their furry friends are encouraged to dress up in their cutest (but comfy) Halloween costumes while perusing through pet-friendly photo booths, artwork, and pet goodies. The free pet adoption event will also feature caricature drawings of pets by Marco, pet friendly photo opps, raffles and prizes! At this spooky pawty, guests will have the chance to snap cute photos with their in cute Halloween themed photo areas, take home original pet caricature drawings, and meet other pet owners or soon to be pet parents. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enter raffles periodically throughout the day for only $1. All proceeds from the raffles will go towards The Animal Pad, a volunteer based 501 C3 non-profit all breed dog rescue that saves dogs from high kill shelters in Southern California and the streets of Mexico.
