Katie Ruiz is a Xicana artist who resides in San Diego. She was raised in Southern California and Northern Arizona. Ruiz is a figure painter and sculptor best known for her blanket series in which she portrays couples standing or lying under colorful Mexican blankets. She has a strong connection with nature and often uses natural objects like rocks, shells, leaves and sticks in her weavings and sculptures. Ruiz is dedicating the piece to another artist who recently passed away, Yolanda López—one of the most important Chicana/o/x artists working in California over the past five decades. Born in 1942 and raised in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood, López was based for much of her career in the Bay Area, where she passed at the age of 79. She is best known for her iconic Virgen de Guadalupe series, a seminal oeuvre in Chicanx feminist art she produced during the 1970s, which became some of the most-widely circulated images of a Chicano artist of her generation. López was also an activist and educator celebrated for her role in the Chicano art movement.
