"Stories in Cloth: Communicating Through Textiles" is an exhibition presented by the La Jolla Historical Society in partnership with the Visions Museum of Textile Art. The show explores how textiles from around the world and throughout history have been used to communicate stories, identity, and shared experience. Focusing on three key themes—storytelling, activism and resistance, and cultural expression—the exhibition highlights historic and contemporary works, collaborations with local artists, and loans from institutions and artists. Stories in Cloth celebrates textiles as powerful tools for connection, creativity, and cultural expression. Featuring works by Charlotte Bird, Patricia Kelly, President of the San Diego People of Color Quilt Guild, Michelle Montjoy, Christine Lee, Maryam Bayat and Persian Place, Claudia Rodríguez-Biezunski of Sew Loka, and the Barona Cultural Center & Museum, this exhibition explores the stories, identities, and traditions expressed through cloth and textile art. Selections from the Visions Museum of Textile Art permanent collection further enrich the exhibition, creating a dialogue between contemporary makers and enduring textile traditions. His father, the celebrated Afro-Cuban jazz trumpeter Fabian González, filled their home with the rhythms and harmonies of Cuba's musical heart. At just sixteen, González took his first professional steps as pianist and composer with former Irakere member Oscar Valdés' Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble Diákara. His original composition won first place at Havana's 2005 JoJazz Festival, earning him a record deal with Cuba's national label Colibrí. His debut album "Habana enTRANCé" went on to win three Cubadisco Awards, Cuba's equivalent of the GRAMMYs. While studying classical composition and orchestration at Havana's prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), piano master Chucho Valdés personally mentored him as he prepared for the Berklee College of Music scholarship auditions — where González earned the first-ever Presidential Scholarship awarded to a Cuban national. In 2013, González moved to New York, quickly becoming a fixture at iconic venues from Joe's Pub and Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola to Jazz at Lincoln Center. His Carnegie Hall debut, presented by Chucho Valdés, affirmed his place among the leading voices in modern jazz piano. His discography includes "Habana enTRANCé" (2007) and "The Grand Concourse" (2018), which received 4.5 stars from DownBeat Magazine. He has been called "a stunningly gifted composer and arranger" by The Wall Street Journal and praised for "a pianism that naturally extends the brilliant legacy of Cuban jazz pianists from Bebo Valdés to Chucho Valdés to Gonzalo Rubalcaba" by LA Weekly. A Yamaha Artist and passionate educator, González has led more than 100 masterclasses worldwide and founded the Cuban Jazz Academy curriculum. His newest project, V.I.D.A., celebrates 25 years of creative evolution — bridging generations, genres, and cultures from Havana to the world's grandest stages. The Olaf Wieghorst Museum presents Larry Maurice – the Cowboy Entertainer – for a one man show on September 12, 2026 in Downtown El Cajon. Rarely in Southern California, Larry brings his classic frontier humor to a contemporary audience. Much like 19th-century humorist Mark Twain, Larry Maurice uses storytelling, verse, and oral history to preserve the culture of the American West. Using minimalist staging, Larry’s personal charisma, vocal modulation, and timing to holds his audience. His stories of the Old West blend historical education with entertainment. Beyond the stage, Larry has been an author, a poet, a rodeo announcer, a master of ceremonies and a historical advocate. He was named Cowboy Poet of the Year and received the American Cowboy Culture Award. You have heard him at the Lone Pine Film Festival, the Autry Museum and on television specials for the FOX network. He can recite cowboy poetry and share historical anecdotes with the best entertainers of the Century. Join us for a delightful evening as Larry brings the old west to life. Come help us put 50 native plants in the ground to create better habitat for native birds and other wildlife. The before-and-after photos show what can happen when a community comes together to restore this special place. Now it’s time to keep that progress growing. All plants and tools will be provided. Just bring yourself and be ready to get your hands dirty. No experience is needed, and everyone is welcome to join in.
