  • This August 27, join Library Shop SD at our Mission Hills location for a conversation with Elizabeth DeLozier and KPBS’ Julia Dixon Evans on "The Whitechapel Full Moon Society," the new novel from the author of "Eleanor of Avignon." This event will include a conversation, Q&A, and author signing. Proceeds from all book sales support the San Diego Public Library. ABOUT THE BOOK Set in Victorian London during Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror, this gripping, original novel is perfect for fans of V. E. Schwab, Dana Schwartz, and Sarah Penner. When Caroline Foster arrives at the Whitechapel Full Moon Society in search of her missing brother, she finds a dilapidated façade belying an interior as opulent as any exclusive gentlemen’s club. In exchange for room and board, Caroline is hired as the Full Moon’s maid, where she is given three orders: don’t ask personal questions, stay out of the iron-barred room on the second floor, and remain in her bedroom from sunup to sundown on the full moon. But when it is revealed that the previous maid was murdered— an early victim of Jack the Ripper— and her brother has left behind no answers, only more questions, Caroline begins to suspect her hosts might be hiding something. As more bodies turn up with a connection to the Society, Caroline fears she may have unwittingly stumbled into a bedtime story, the kind with monsters and curses, family secrets and ancient lore. Tantalizing and pulsing, Elizabeth DeLozier’s sophomore novel gives an exciting alternative look into the infamous Jack the Ripper story with a major, supernatural twist. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Elizabeth DeLozier holds a BA in Spanish literature, a BS in biological anthropology, and a doctorate in physical therapy. A practicing pelvic floor physical therapist, chaotic Virgo, and vegetarian, she lives in San Diego with her husband, twin sons and rescue dogs. • Join us for a night of healing, conservation, and friendship at the historic Balboa Theatre in San Diego on August 19th. "The Last Dive" is a new documentary that premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the award for best cinematography in a doc feature! This exclusive event will feature a full night of programming including a red carpet, a special healing activation and guided meditation, a Daybreaker dance party, an exciting raffle, and panel discussion with Director Cody Sheehy, special guest Terry Kennedy, and Executive Director of Wildcoast Serge Dedina, Ph.D, Chapter Director of Sierra Club San Diego Mark West, Western Director of NRDC Joel Reynolds, Founder and President of WarFighter Scuba Nick Powers, and manta researcher Jane Vinesky. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Cody Sheehy and produced by acclaimed Mark Monroe, "The Last Dive" is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant documentary that invites viewers to reflect on our connection to the natural world — and the wild, mysterious creatures that help us find our place in it. Terry is a legendary figure in Baja, Mexico, an American veteran who has spent decades living on and in the water. Once a man burdened by a troubled past, Terry’s life was transformed by an unlikely friendship with Willy, a 22-foot oceanic manta ray. For nearly two decades, Willy would slap his wings against the hull of Terry’s sailboat to signal their next dive, and together they explored the ocean’s depths — an extraordinary bond that turned Terry into an unexpected conservationist. Now in his 80s, Terry embarks on one final journey to a remote island in hopes of reuniting with his old friend. But he’s also searching for something deeper: peace, closure, and a chance to say goodbye. Official Film Website "The Last Dive" on Facebook / Instagram
