In an era when science was reshaping humanity’s understanding of the universe, artists like Liszt and Mahler turned inward, exploring the mystery of destiny and the courage required to face it. Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 unfolds like an opera without words – its soloist cast as the hero in a drama of triumph and struggle. Once the most celebrated virtuoso in Europe, Liszt used dazzling technique and vivid theatricality to create music that pushed the piano to visionary extremes. Barnatan embodies the concerto’s hero, alternately bold and lyrical amid waves of orchestral color. Written half a century later, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 expands this Romantic struggle into an epic. Quoting Liszt’s concerto near its opening, Mahler acknowledges his predecessor while plunging deeper into questions of destiny, mortality, and meaning. Scored for colossal forces – complete with the infamous “hammer blows of fate” – the symphony unfolds as an immense human tragedy. Mahler’s “Tragic” is both homage and prophecy: a portrait of heroism facing a collapsing world and a moving testament to the resilience of the human spirit. As the number of new cancer cases in males continues to rise, Scripps Cancer Center will host a free men’s cancer support group on Wednesday July 15 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.. The premier San Diego art exhibition celebrating the work of Black visual artists and creatives. Part of Kinfolk Fest Juneteenth Week. "ONYX: A Black Artist Exhibition" is a celebration of Black creative expression rooted in San Diego. Curated by Imani Camara, the exhibition brings together Black artists who are from or currently based in the city — painters, musicians, visual artists, and storytellers whose work deserves to be seen, documented, and celebrated on its own terms. The exhibition moves beyond singular narratives. Each work on view reflects a distinct voice, medium, and perspective, while contributing to a larger collective portrait of what Black creativity looks like in San Diego today. "ONYX" creates space for ambiguity, experimentation, and personal storytelling — honoring the full depth of each artist's identity rather than flattening it. The title is intentional. Like the stone, "ONYX" speaks to layered identities and the depth formed through connection. It also references discovery — many of the artists featured were found simply through conversation and community, which raises a question the exhibition sits with: how had they not been seen before? This special exhibition date for "ONYX" is part of Kinfolk Fest Week, San Diego's Juneteenth celebration. The San Diego Black art scene is actively taking shape, and this exhibition is both a reflection of that and an investment in it.
