The Kamil family, Department of Visual Arts, and School of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego invite you to the 16th Annual Adam D. Kamil Media Awards Ceremony. Please join us for an evening of film and creativity to honor the memory of Adam Douglas Kamil and showcase the talent of undergraduate UC San Diego students. The Adam D. Kamil Media Awards were developed to help UC San Diego undergraduates polish their skills in film production and to help them realize their creative potential in this field. Adam was a UC San Diego, Visual Arts Media major with a passion for the power of media to connect people. To honor the memory of their son, the Kamil family established the Adam D. Kamil Media Awards. The awards consist of a grand prize of $4,000 and two finalist prizes of $2,000 each. All submissions will be viewable in the Kamil Gallery May 14-20, and in the Kamil Gallery Online. Winners will be announced at the ceremony on May 15, and the prize winning projects will be screened. “We hope that through this award, Adam’s creative spirit will inspire others to develop their talents and to grow as sympathetic and sensitive individuals,” stated Elaine Kamil. Arts Unite at Oceanside Theatre Company (217 N. Coast Highway) launches its inaugural play reading series celebrating the work of military veteran playwrights — an evening of bold, diverse storytelling shaped by lived experience. Directed by Liz Frances, the program features six short plays by local writers Peter Mitsopoulos, Victor Lang, Mark Holley, Laura Vines, Scooter, and Janiece Jordan. While the playwrights share a background of military service, the stories themselves span a wide range of themes, styles, and experiences. The evening will conclude with a conversation with the artists, offering audiences a chance to engage more deeply with the work and creating space for dialogue, reflection, and connection. Experience bold, abstract expressionist works by local artist Stephen Williams while enjoying complimentary wine, beer, and curated bites. Explore the collection, connection with community, and participate in a silent auction, with proceeds directly supporting Adjoin’s mission to serve veterans and individuals with disabilities. Adjoin is bringing together the community through canvas and cuisine at the stunning Hyangle Art Gallery in downtown San Diego. Join us for a night of visual storytelling, generous giving, and refined flavors, where every bite and brushstroke contributes to a greater cause. Local artist, Stephen Williams, was one of the first artists to collaborate with Adjoin and lead a mindfulness art workshop for artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities that infused journaling, breathwork, and abstract art expression. Each artist learned valuable tools to expand their creativity, connect physical art with mental health, and build confidence to create without expectations. As a professional abstract painter, certified art therapy practitioner, community leader, and owner of The Hyangle Art Gallery in Downtown San Diego, Williams often donates his time and resources to make art accessible to the public through local nonprofits. Adjoin and Stephen Williams are continuing to share the meaningful impact art has on people with disabilities as a means of communication and expression by hosting an elevated evening of fun and philanthropy. Madhushree Ghosh is the daughter of refugees and an immigrant to America. She is also the author of the award-winning "Khabaar: An Immigrant Journey of Food, Memory, and Family". She uses food to discuss civil rights, social justice, culinary, community, and cultural history. Ghosh’s work has appeared in Best American Essays in Food Writing, been Pushcart nominated, and published in The New York Times, Vogue India, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Lit Hub, The Rumpus, and Atlas Obscura, among other outlets. She runs the global literary salon and super club KhabaarCo, enabling conversations on food cultures, writing, travel, and mindful activism through conversations with changemaking activists, historians, authors, and chefs.
