Helen Woodward Animal Center is delighted to welcome pets and people to our 11th annual Pop Culture-themed Dog Cosplay spectacle – PAWmicon. The adorable event, which pays homage to Comic-Con International is gearing up to return in full tail-wagging force at a brand-new location (AleSmith Brewery) with plenty of space and activities for Superfuzzies big and small. This family-friendly event encourages attendees to grab their canine sidekick and celebrate with themed photo experiences, music, activities, Comic and Pop Culture Trivia, opportunity drawings, a BARKetplace & Artist Showcase, and more. The highlight of the event is the all-important PAWSplay Contest for superheroes and their heroic dogs, sponsored by Trusted Housesitters. The PAWSplay Contest is separated into three fun categories including Superheroes & Super Villains, Pop Culture Pups and Dynamic Duos – for those who want to dress up alongside their fuzzy family member or have multiple dogs in costume. While comic book enthusiasts wait all year for Comic-Con International, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite action-adventure stars, orphan dogs and cats at Helen Woodward Animal Center will wait a lifetime to meet their superheroes – individuals with one sole mission…to rescue an orphan pet. At its core, this unique event has one life-saving mission: To inspire individuals to perform a superhero action of their own and adopt an orphan pet. Upon adoption, these furry sidekicks will quickly reveal their own superhero abilities to save us right back. Tickets to PAWmicon are free. 4 Tuesdays each month from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 13-18 welcome! Lead instructor, Steffi Dotson, teaches this class that covers the properties of wood, machine safety and woodworking basics. Students will learn woodworking techniques, and safe practice of machine operations will be taught. Depending on the specific project, joinery techniques, proper sanding and finishing are part of the curriculum. Each attendee will make their own project. All materials are included. A big Fair welcome to 50s, 60s and 70s music legend, Smokey Robinson as he croons his way onto the Corona Grandstand Stage as part of the San Diego County Fair's Toyota Summer Concert Series. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and DOUBLE Hollywood Walk of Fame member, Robinson started his career as The Miracles front man and rose up through the music industry ranks to the Hall of Famer he is today. Multi-talented Smokey Robinson is an R&B and soul singer, songwriter, record producer and former Motown record executive who started his illustrious career dating back to the mid-50s. As the founder and frontman for the group The Miracles, becoming Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1965, Robinson was the chief songwriter and producer of their 22 albums and smash top ten hits such as, "You've Really Got a Hold on Me,” "Mickey's Monkey,” "I Second That Emotion,” "Baby Baby Don't Cry" and the group's only number-one hit during their Robinson years, "The Tears of a Clown.” In 1972 he focused his full attention to helping run Motown Records, retiring in 1988. In early 2023 he wrote, recorded and released his first album in almost a decade, called Gasms. Robinson’s vocal mastery is known and loved by many across nearly four generations. The historic Gaslamp Quarter in the heart of San Diego is proud to announce its multi-week jovial fete, the Gaslamp Holiday Market. The exhibit prompts reflection on how alterations in sensory perception, whether due to trauma or aging, can profoundly affect individuals and communal understanding. The purpose of the event is to provide a safe space for our boys and men of San Diego, to talk about their needs, wants and dreams. The goal is to provide a well thought out and executed day of activities that provide in the moment support and well after the day is complete. We would also like to provide support for the single moms and dads who may feel left out from underneath umbrella community support. Our Breakout Rooms will allow boys and men a private space for conversation that focuses on how males handle stress, relationships, fatherhood, education, employment and leadership. Our interactive activities will give the boys space with men in a mentorship/leadership capacity with supervision from trained professionals. Our outdoor space will be amazing for the kids!

The event will include a live presentation, meet & greet, storytime, special craft, and more! Included with Museum admission. No registration required. Opportunities to pet the animals are limited and timed-tickets will be provided upon checking in. **Petting is entirely contingent upon the animals' well-being. We recommend arriving at the Museum early to maximize your chances of meeting the animals. A Hold Harmless form is required to be filled out for all guests who want to pet the animals.
