Zero Waste San Diego is hosting a SD Fixit Clinic in Chula Vista at Norman Parks Senior Center. Bring your broken, non-functioning things: electronics, appliances, computers, toys, bicycles, clothes, etc. for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. We’ll provide work-space, specialty tools, and guidance to help you disassemble and troubleshoot your item and it’s all free, though we welcome donations to keep the movement growing! Rooted Voices is a collaborative series presented by San Diego Master Chorale and the Center for World Music, celebrating the power of traditional vocal music to connect us across cultures, generations, and lived experience. The first program in the series, Rooted Voices: Bulgaria, features renowned Bulgarian folksinger Tzvetanka Varimezova in an immersive workshop exploring the distinctive sound, style, and spirit of Bulgarian vocal traditions. Participants will learn directly from a master artist through listening, call-and-response singing, and shared cultural context—no prior experience required. The program draws from a wide and varied repertoire, reflecting the remarkable range of the classical guitar — from intimate solo works to the full texture of quartet playing. Kenneth Bender (Encinitas, CA) A San Diego native with nearly two decades of dedicated practice, Kenneth brings warmth and technical depth to everything he plays — from solo works to chamber settings. Austin Keller (Pocatello, ID) An award-winning guitarist and pianist who experiences music as color, Austin's playing has an expressive originality that has earned him top prizes in competitions across the country. Benji Scheckner (Encinitas, CA) A current student of Maestro Pepe Romero, Benji has performed as a concerto soloist, as a soloist, and in numerous ensemble settings, including at the Granada Guitar Festival. At 15, he plays with a depth and sensitivity that goes well beyond his years. Art of Elan continues its partnership with UC San Diego’s ArtPower with a deeply personal, intimate program centered on the human voice entitled “Mayrig” (“mother” in Armenian). The show was created by Karen Ouzounian and Lembit Beecher for cello with electronics, piano and vocals. The voices of Karen’s mother and grandmother are interwoven with original arrangements of Armenian music of her family’s past home of Anatolia, songs and stories drawn from their post-genocide home of Lebanon, and the beloved music of Charles Aznavour.
