Ekphrastic writing has been described as “taking the visual and transforming it to the verbal.” This form of writing, used for centuries, encourages writers to use visual art as a muse for putting words to paper. In this highly generative, immersive workshop, participants will engage with imaginative writing prompts, exploring the use of images as a source of inspiration for creativity. This generative, interactive session will cover numerous ways on how visual art can be a wellspring for new projects and a way to infuse current projects with energy and excitement. We’ll experience the various forms ekphrastic writing can take, using our own unique perspectives to create fresh narratives. The workshop will include a taste of SoulCollage®, an expressive arts method, through which we’ll create and write from our own images. (No artistic background required.) Participants will have the opportunity to share their work and receive positive, uplifting feedback, and they’ll leave with several short pieces they may wish to develop further. This year's Race Day-themed event will take participants on a spirited tour through three of La Mesa's favorite establishments: Coin Haus, The Regal Bar, and Casa Gabriela. Guests are encouraged to embrace the racing theme with checkered flags, pit crew uniforms, racing jerseys, and winner's circle-inspired attire. All proceeds from the event directly support Home of Guiding Hands' life-changing programs and services, including residential housing, early childhood development, independent living skills training, life planning, respite care, and other essential supports that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full, meaningful lives. For more than 50 years, Home of Guiding Hands has provided quality community-based services to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout San Diego County. Events like Cheers for Charity help ensure individuals receive the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive. In this class, you will get to hear selections of your play out loud so that you can assess if your dialogue, pace, and plot are working. These are things that are difficult to do in your own head. Join award-winning Playwright and teaching artist, Gill Sotu, as we share each other’s work and get valuable weekly feedback to get your short or long form play into shape to submit for readings or productions around the country. His forthcoming exhibition, "Paintings and Mixed Media Works from the Early 1960's to the Present," offers a rare, comprehensive look at the evolution of an artist whose work has consistently challenged conventions while maintaining a distinctive visual language unmistakably his own. Born with an innate curiosity about the possibilities of paint and form, Morris emerged during a pivotal moment in American art history. While the art world of the 1960s was dominated by Pop Art and Minimalism, Morris carved out his own territory, developing a unique approach that synthesized elements of abstraction, figuration, and architectural space. His early works from this period already demonstrated the sophisticated color sensibility and compositional rigor that would become hallmarks of his mature style.
