The program brings together two audience favorites from Artistic Director Javier Velasco: the romantic QUE BONITO AMOR, set to a rapturous score of mariachi music, and the high-energy MAMBOMANIA, one of Velasco’s signature works. Together, the works showcase a side of San Diego Ballet that has become a hallmark of the company during its 37-year history: classical dance infused with the music, culture and energy of the region it calls home. “Día de los Muertos is a beautiful celebration of the people we’ve loved and lost, and these two ballets have always been deeply personal to me,” said Velasco. “Mambomania was inspired by my father’s love of mambo music, while Que Bonito Amor grew from memories of dancing with my mother to mariachi music. In many ways, these works have become my own altar to my parents, bringing their spirit back to me through music and dance.” QUE BONITO AMOR pairs ballet with the passion and romance of mariachi music, creating a colorful celebration of love and Mexican musical tradition. MAMBOMANIA turns up the tempo with Velasco’s exuberant choreography, blending the precision of ballet with the irresistible rhythms and energy of mambo. At Valle, Thanksgiving becomes a celebration of the land, the harvest, and the people who bring them to our table. Inspired by the spirit of gratitude that defines Thanksgiving, Gracias a la Tierra explores the holiday through Valle’s perspective, connecting the abundance of California and Baja California with the deep-rooted Mexican tradition of honoring the tierra that sustains us. Through a special dining experience, Chef Roberto Alcocer brings together seasonal ingredients, ancestral Mexican techniques, and the flavors of the borderlands to tell a story of harvest, family, memory, and place. It is a moment to pause, gather around the table, and give thanks, not only for what we have, but for where it comes from: the land, the people, the farmers, our families, and the traditions that continue to nourish us. In this session, you will explore the beauty of this celebration while creating your very own mini ofrenda (altar). Learn about the meaning behind this tradition and immerse in its beauty creating papel picado, cempasuchil flowers, candles, and other special elements as you design your meaningful altar to take home. This workshop is a fun, hands-on cultural art experience celebrating love, family, and remembrance. No experience necessary. All materials included. Celebrate National Carousel Day at the historic Dorothea Laub Balboa Park Carousel on Saturday, July 25, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. National Carousel Day is a FREE community event presented by Forever Balboa Park, offering free carousel rides all day, family-friendly activities, and live entertainment. Food from local vendors will be available for purchase. Live Entertainment Schedule: Noon – 1 p.m.: Young Lions Jazz Conservatory 1 – 1:30 p.m.: Kathryn the Grape 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.: Mariachis and Folklorico Dancers 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.: Opera for Kids Balboa Park’s historic Herschell-Spillman Carousel was built in 1910 and still spins on its original General Electric motor to music played on its original military band organ.
