An eclectic collective of 19 artists embody the unifying theme “Better Together” in a contemporary fine art exhibition (Thumbprint Gallery) from July 3 - August 1, 2026. Free Opening Reception: Friday, July 3, 4-9 p.m. The month-long “Better Together” art exhibition presented by Thumbprint Gallery is guest curated by San Diego based artist Lourans Mikhail. Mikhail, who was born in Baghdad, Iraq and raised in Chicago, Illinois, hand-picked artists from San Diego, Los Angeles and across the country to animate the exhibition theme. “My vision was for people to feel inspired when they experience the numerous ways in which artists exemplify the value of togetherness,” explained Mikhail. Curator Lourans Mikhail is a painter, sculptor, and graphic designer, who spent 13 years as a US Marine. His own work is inspired by his Assyrian heritage, graffiti, comics, anime, cartoons, and fine art. In his art, Mikhail uses diverse media to explore different perspectives and challenge the narratives of socioeconomics, culture, politics, and race. “Being a curator of this exhibition is another way I get to draw on what I’ve experienced in life as an immigrant, a veteran, as a father…but this way I’m doing so through the most creative people I know.” The “Better Together” exhibition is on display at Thumbprint Gallery from July 3 to August 1 from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can also contact the gallery to request a private showing appointment. Learn Block Printing on Fabric! Thursday, October 15, from 6-8:30 p.m. Learn the process of block printing on fabric in this beginner-friendly 2.5 hour workshop! Led by local-artist and printmaker Kasey Leung, you’ll be guided step-by-step through designing, carving, and hand-printing your very own original block. Use it to create a custom tote bag or tea towel in class – perfect for everyday use or a thoughtful handmade gift. We’ll explore simple pattern-building and placement techniques to help bring your design to life on fabric. The emphasis is on process over perfection, with plenty of room to experiment and enjoy making with your hands. No experience needed and all materials are provided. Feel free to come to class with ideas, inspiration, or printed reference images for printing – just keep in mind that your design will need to fit within a 4×6 inch block. You’ll leave with a finished textile piece and your carved block to take home, so you can keep printing and creating long after the workshops ends! Please note there is a materials fee of $5 paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of class. Make Tiny Ceramics! Saturday, November 7, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. -OR- December 5, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Join us in the land of miniatures. You will learn how to throw pottery on a mini wheel and no previous pottery experience is necessary! This is a great way to try wheel throwing and learn how to center clay that is less intimidating and less commitment, and if you love it and want to learn more, the Craft Collective has a variety of weekday evening and weekend full-size ceramic wheel classes to choose from! In this 2-hour class, you will watch step-by-step how to use a mini wheel and will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. You will create 1-3 tiny pots over the class period. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is also a small class setting, so you can get personalized one-on-one support. At the end of the class you can choose glaze colors, and once your pieces have dried a bit, they will be smoothed, trimmed, glazed and fired for you. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after class. No experience necessary.
