The Downtown Chula Vista Association is thrilled to announce the return of its annual Día de los Muertos celebration on Sunday, November 1, 2026 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., bringing the community together for an evening of culture, remembrance and tradition in the heart of Downtown Chula Vista. The free, family-friendly event transforms Third Avenue and Memorial Park into a vibrant space that honors loved ones who have passed while celebrating the beauty and significance of the holiday. Throughout the event, attendees can experience an exciting lineup of activities that honor the traditions of Día de los Muertos while creating a festive atmosphere for all ages. Guests can visit the community ofrenda on Davidson Street, where they are encouraged to bring a photo of a loved one to pin on the altar, as well as participate in the anticipated Ofrenda Competition and Catrín & Catrina Ensemble Contest. The celebration will also feature live music and dance performances, a classic car show, hands-on children’s crafts, themed photo opportunities, and artisan shopping at Mercado by Las Jefas Market, showcasing local makers and vendors. Food and beverage offerings from local restaurants round out the experience, inviting guests to stroll through Downtown Chula Vista while enjoying the neighborhood’s vibrant tribute. As visitors explore the neighborhood, they will encounter marigold-lined displays, large-scale alebrijes, and traditional Catrina-inspired installations curated by local artists, offering backdrops that reflect the spirit of the holiday. The Tijuana-san Diego border is the world’s leading hub for skateboard production. This is where the material globalization of skate culture and all it entails originates; from here, its products traverse the seven continents. At the same time, many of its practitioners are denied this very freedom of movement, trapped by borders real and allegorical. Boarder Crossings: Patinetas, Paz, y DIY Democracy, a project of the Fred J. Hansen Peace Chair at San Diego State University, recognizes the humble skateboard, seven layers of glued-together wood, as a window through which to understand community, control, and networks of exchange within and against the border regime. In the shadow of the border fences, is there a grassroots community skating back to power and inspiring new pragmatic approaches to democracy? By learning from the practical and political ethos at the heart of these communities, might we speak of a ‘DIY Democracy’? Multiple artists, artificially separated by the border, provide a tangible response to these questions through numerous works created on boards produced in Tijuana’s maquiladoras, each depicting a border that is at once fixed and fragile – a place of deafening proclamations and silent experiences of counter-power. Positioning itself at the heart of the contradiction between mobile objects and immobilized people, Boarder Crossings imagines mending this artificial rift. The Boarder Crossings project features a total of 52 board-based artworks. The pieces not on display here are currently hanging on the walls of the Sala Central at the Centro Cultural de Tijuana (June 21–September 27). The pieces you see here are additions or works that have come from CECUT, crossing the border. while those artworks you see here are displayed here in San Diego, the "voids" left in Tijuana are symbolic of the absences many artists and people along the border live with daily, marked by family separations, deportations, desires for mobility, and severed friendships and affections. As spectators in Tijuana are doing right now, please gaze at these works, immerse yourself in their creativity, feel the absence they mark across the border, and reflect on how we might collectively build "DIY democracy" from the bottom up. This event bridges the gap between art and advocacy, examining the show’s role in highlighting crucial issues such as the HIV/AIDS epidemic, LGBTQIA+ identity, housing instability, and economic justice. Upcycling Fun! Thursday, August 13, from 6-8:30 p.m. Give new life to your wardrobe in this creative, beginner-friendly 2.5 hour workshop! Led by local-artist and printmaker Kasey Leung, you’ll learn how to design, carve, and hand-print your own original block, then use it to transform a piece of clothing you already own. Bring a garment like a denim jacket, linen pants, cotton shirt, or canvas tote, and learn how to thoughtfully place your print to create a one-of-a-kind wearable piece. Feel free to come with ideas, inspiration, or printed reference images, keeping in mind that your design will need to fit within a 4×6 inch block. The best fabrics for block printing are natural fibers with smooth, tight weaves, such as cotton or linen. It’s best to avoid stretchy, heavily textured, or fuzzy fabrics like knit or wool. No experience needed and all printing materials are provided. Just bring a few cotton or linen-based items, and we can work together to select the best one to print on! This workshop is all about personal expression, experimentation, and embracing the beauty of handmade imperfections. You’ll leave with a refreshed, uniquely yours piece of clothing and your carved block to keep creating at home.
