Join UC San Diego Library for their 25th Annual Toy Piano Festival at noon Sunday, Sept 30 in the Seuss Room of Geisel Library. Performers include Jim Chute, Kenneth Herman, Christian Hertzog, Scott Paulson, Barbara Scheidker and special guest Sue Palmer, known as “The Queen of Boogie-Woogie.” This event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Fun Toy Piano Facts: The first composer to write a “serious” work for toy piano was John Cage, who visited the UC San Diego campus several times, including a two-week stay as a Regents lecturer in the 1980s. Alumnus Scott Paulson, who was on campus for Cage’s lectures, cites Cage’s influence as a major impetus for this festival, of which Paulson is the director. In 1999, a missing service bell at a Geisel Library help desk spawned a long streak of toy piano activity at UC San Diego. The bell was replaced by a playful, tiny keyboard and a sign: “Please play on toy piano for service.” And play they did! The resultant flurry of toy piano activity led to the establishment of The Toy Piano Collection at Geisel Library. The collection consists of actual instruments, commissioned scores, and existing literature and recordings. Most of the commissioned scores in the collection have been composed by UC San Diego alumni. In May 2001, the Library of Congress issued a subject heading and call number for toy piano scores because of the commissioning activities at Geisel Library. Join the Greater San Diego Music Coterie for an exciting exhibition of "Exotic Attractions" on Sunday, September 28 at 2:30 p.m. at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Hillcrest. Featuring the Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra directed by Dr. Angela Yeung, the performance samples the Western art music composers' interpretation of exoticism: selections from Lully's Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, Weber's Incidental Music to Turandot, Beethoven's Ruins of Athens, Ibert's Escales, and Holst's Beni Mora. Soprano Emily Ortlieb will perform the Bell Aria from Delibes's Lakmé and “Asie” from Ravel's song cycle Shéhérazade. All Saints Episcopal Church offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The Mad Hat Hucksters return to Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 223rd session of Dim Sum & Jazz. The Mad Hat Hucksters are a swing band from San Diego, playing the music of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Founded by swing dancer Morgan Day in 2015, this sextet finds their sound in the style of small combo jazz bands of the swing era, emulating greats like Fats Waler, Sydney Bechet, and Louis Armstrong. Join us for an interactive walk and panel at the Tijuana River Estuary, Southern California's largest wetlands, where we will delve into the unique ecosystem and discuss the transboundary water crisis. The afternoon's activities include: - A guided walk which will highlight the resilience of the Tijuana Estuary as well as the incredible ecosystem services estuaries provide, such as mitigating climate change. The walk will also be a fantastic opportunity to observe the diverse plant communities and wildlife that depend on this protected wetland. - Interact with non-profit organizations who work on the Tijuana River pollution crisis in various capacities: as advocates, on restoration efforts, or to educate the public on the issue. - A panel discussion led by WildCoast, Sierra Club San Diego, and San Diego Coastkeeper with nonprofit leaders and elected officials working together on a complex bi-national water pollution crisis. This pollution crisis is a culmination of infrastructure degradation, rapid urbanization, and multi-jurisdiction management challenges.
