The Bonita Museum & Cultural Center is excited to bring back an event that highlights local restaurants and chefs in the Sweetwater Valley. Saturday, September 27, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., join us for a night of great food, friends, and music. Guests will enjoy tastes from local restaurants, showcasing the diverse and exciting cuisines of the region. The museum will be open late for visitors to enjoy. This signature fundraising event supports free educational and public programs for over 5000 school children and community members in the South Bay. During the event, enjoy visiting the museum at night and learning about South Bay San Diego art, history and culture. Bonita is located in a rural unincorporated part of San Diego County nestled in the Sweetwater River Valley. Find out about the rustic character of the valley through artifacts and history objects in the museum. Nearly 1,000 acres of the valley are permanently preserved as open space, including much of the riverbed. Several stables operate in the valley and horses are not an uncommon site on the miles of trails that crisscross the valley. At the museum be on the lookout for fossils from the area, the footprint of the Proctor Valley Monster as well as Henrietta, the Rhode Island Red chicken. Starting at the age of 8, he spent ten years studying classical piano performance, music theory, and creative music expression. Raised in New York and Chicago, he returned to New York City in the 80s and spent many years playing music full-time in Manhattan. While living in New York, Wolff studied with several great pianists: Barry Harris (Keeper of the Bebop Flame), Mike Longo (Musical Director for Dizzy Gillespie), and Kenny Werner (Author of Effortless Mastery and a global music legend). He also performed/recorded with many great jazz players including Victor Lewis, Calvin Hill, Rebecca Franks, and others. He was fortunate to record with two of Ahmad Jamal’s drummers: Vernel Fournier and Frank Gant. (Vernel Fournier is credited with developing the iconic drumbeat used in Jamal’s recording of “Poinciana” in the 1950s.) During this time, Wolff also taught music at the Johnny Colon School of Music in East Harlem, as well as playing in clubs, restaurants, cafes, and private engagements throughout the New York City region. In 1987, he was approached by Long Island University in Brooklyn and offered a full music scholarship. He received a degree with honors in 1990. Relocating to San Diego in the 1990s, Adam Wolff performed with different groups, ranging from jazz to popular dance music to creative expression performances. In 2004, he co-founded Blue44, a music collective with a distinctive theme of “ambient grooves”. Wolff’s music contains key elements of excitement and hard-swinging, soulful, creative musical expression. These elements come through in all his performances. CHA is proud to announce the opening of its newest WWII exhibit. In honor of this exhibit, join us Thursday, November 6, for an exhibit opening reception and lecture featuring author Kitty Morse. Kitty will discuss her new book, "Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France." This book was written after she discovered her great-grandfather's journal chronicling the advance of the Germans in Le Grand Est (Alsace-Lorraine) between April and December 1940, and two notebooks filled with recipes written in her great-grandmother’s hand in a suitcase left to her by her mother. "Bitter Sweet" takes place in and around her mother’s birthplace, Châlons-sur-Marne (now Châlons-en-Champagne.) Blanche Lévy-Neymarck, Morse's maternal great-grandmother, died at Auschwitz in 1944 along with one of her daughters and her son-in-law. Blanche's husband Prosper, an army surgeon in WWI, was twice the recipient of the Légion d'Honneur. This book is not just the story of a family torn apart by war, but it also features 70 unique recipes that show the rich history of a family. About the Speaker: Award-winning author Kitty Morse was born in Casablanca, Morocco, to a French mother and a British father. She emigrated to the United States at the age of 17. While studying for her Master’s Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Kitty catered Moroccan diffas, or banquets, and went on to teach the intricacies of Moroccan cuisine in cooking schools and department stores nationwide. In June 2002, she conducted a Culinary Concert on Moroccan culture and cuisine hosted by Julia Child, as a benefit for the Harry Bell Foundation of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Kitty’s books have been translated into French, German, Polish, and Czech. In 1984 (and for the next 25 years) she initiated annual gastronomic tours to Morocco that included culinary demonstrations in her family home, a Moorish riad south of Casablanca.
