Create a professional arm-rod-and-mouth puppet of your very own from Rene Rubalcava, owner and puppeteer of LV Puppet Studio of Las Vegas who learned the art of puppet making from a Jim Henson Muppeteer. There’s no better time to create your own one-of-a-kind fuzzy monster! In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. Students bring their puppets to life with their own unique interests and imaginations, and by choice and placement of different face details. Each one is unique! This film presents a fond and informative portrait of pioneering female jazz trumpeter Clora Bryant, a proponent of West Coast jazz whose early stints with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm led eventually to collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, among others. Rich with tunes and anecdotes, the documentary handsomely details Bryant’s long journey in music and her influence on generations of musicians. UCSD prof and filmmaker Zeinabu irene Davis will be in attendance. The only reason Ms. Bryant isn't better known is because she's a woman. Part of "More Than Rhythm: A Black Music Series," an engaging public library 6 month film series exploring the sweeping history and evolution of African diasporic music. It traces the journey of rhythm and sound from the West African roots of the banjo to the electronic beats of modern house and funk music. Kids & Adults, learn to wet felt fun eco-friendly diffusers! Saturday, October 18, 1-3 p.m. In this 2-hour workshop you will learn the basics of the ancient art of felting, and you will make 2 wool diffusers…which make great gifts! The diffusers or ornaments, if you decide not to scent them, are made with three felted balls, colorful ribbons or embroidery thread and wooden beads. You will use merino wool and a wet felting technic to create the felted balls. The balls can later be scented by dropping essential oil or spraying perfume on them. The essential oils or perfume are not provided. This project require the use of sharp sewing needles. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome! Children 8-11 years are also welcome but need to be accompanied by a paying adult. All materials are provided, except for essential oils/perfume. In 1829, free Black abolitionist living in Boston David Walker published a pamphlet, "Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World," that sent shock waves of terror through slaveholding America. It was a direct and radical challenge to slavery in the U.S. Join Professors Matsemela Odom and Thekima Mayasa of Mesa College and Danny Widener of UCSD for a stimulating discussion of the Appeal, its status as the most radical of all anti-slavery documents, and its international call to arms against enslavement and anti-Blackness.
