Paul Combs holds a B.Mus. in composition from the Philadelphia Musical Academy and a M.M. in performance at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His eclectic career has included performing, composing for theater, film radio and television, and producing and announcing at radio stations in Philadelphia and Boston. From 1986 to 1999 he worked full-time in music education. As a music education activist he was a founding member and two-term Chair of the Society for General Music in Massachusetts (SGMM), and later sat on the Board of the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE). “Paul plays heavenly alto.” Valerie Ridenour – Key West, The Newspaper Most recently Mr. Combs taught wind instruments privately and was on the faculty of the Lowell Jazz Day Camp. He also directed the Jazz Ensemble of the Chelmsford Community Band. Monday, November 20, 21 & 22 from 9 a.m. – Noon Ages 3-6 welcome! Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your preschool age child will go on seasonal explorations celebrating the abundance of Fall, observing and learning about various things in nature in our on-site organic garden. They will explore through sensory activities, crafts and stories while developing fine motor skills. Campers will make season-themed crafts in various mediums–clay, wood and textiles. Littles learn best by doing and playing. We practice handwork and workplay. We “play” with natural objects and materials such as wood, stones, clay, felt, paper + more! Each project is planned so that children build skills while satisfying their need to explore. Projects are safe, non-toxic, earth friendly, and full of creativity. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station in the afternoon, and their camp begins as ours ends, we are happy to walk your child to their next camp. If you’d like your camper to stay during the lunch hour, there’s a $15 fee for the week to cover the lunchtime gap. Drawing from the styles of Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell and Elmore James, Robin has moulded his own intense and entertaining personal style. Robin’s performances often include stories and anecdotes regarding the history of the blues and the unique vintage instruments he performs with. He is a four time recipient of "Best Blues" at the San Diego Music Awards. You can almost hear the scratches on the 78. -San Diego Reader Robin's live shows are nothing short of inspirational. There is something genuinely raw, base and animalistic about his gut-wrenching, honest music. -360 Degrees Robin Henkel promises nothing, if not a surprise here and there. This is just the way the San Diego native is. He wants to shake things up, so expect the unexpected. As a guitar player, Robin can play blues, jazz, funk, country swing, Hawaiian and Latin music. He borrows from each of those styles when he performs and sometimes even surprises himself with the musical direction his songs take."I like playing music", he says. It just feels good. Henkel's strength is when he picks up that sawed-off pipe fitting and puts it on his baby finger and then lays it on the strings of a resonator or Dobro. All of a sudden the awkward kid from Serra Mesa is transformed into the man in the corner at the Delta house party who commands everyones attention. When Robin plays slide guitar, he steels the show. You probably haven't seen anything like this for years and you may not see it again anytime soon. Though he leans toward playing jazz these days, he won Best Blues CD at the San Diego Music Awards (2000) for his "Highway" recording. "I don't quite know how I did that," he says "there's not much blues on it." To make amends, Henkel has vowed to record a blues album next. A day full of train songs, with more adventures around Old Poway Park. All free! The Poway-Midland Railroad will be running the narrow-gauge vintage trains around the park for a nominal fee, which goes to support the nonprofit organization that maintains the railroad. The following is our schedule of performers on the Gazebo Stage: 10 a.m. - Hullabaloo. We will start the day with family-friendly folk fun from our friends at Hullabaloo. Grab something from the farmers market and bring the kids on over. 11 a.m. - Patty Hall. We have coaxed Patty out of her pandemic pause for this show. Her shows make people happy! Noon - Cowboy Jack. Cowboy Jack knows ALL the classic country songs, and knows how to deliver them so you know he means it. This man is the Real Deal. 1 p.m. - Sara Petite. She shows what a century of American music sounds like filtered through the psyche of a 21st century west coast woman. 2 p.m. - Clinton Davis. It is doubtful there is another San Diegan as versed in old time folk music repertoire, and certainly not one as skilled at so many instruments. We do not know if he will be playing guitar, banjo, fiddle, or his banjo-mandolin – but we know it will smoke! 3 p.m. - Tyler Grant. We are tickled to get this man on our stage for the first time. He is an icon in that world where Doc Watson and Jerry Garcia equally inspire guitar pickers, and we hope to see more of him, so make sure you stick around and say “Howdy”.

The “Pleasure of Your Company” concert series, sponsored by Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library welcomes the Redwood Trio on Sunday, November 19, at 2:30 P.M. Comprised of violinist Lauren Basney, cellist Peter Ko, and pianist Dr. Byron Chow, the trio will perform works by Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich. The Redwood Trio aims to bring a fresh perspective to the concert stage in performing both traditional repertoire and lesser-known works for the combination of piano, violin, and cello. Join us for an afternoon of beautiful chamber music performed in the intimate setting of the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center. There is no charge for the concert, although donations are appreciated. Masks are encouraged but not currently required.
