Salsa Night: Bring your dancing shoes! 5:30 p.m. – Salsa class 6:30 p.m. – Performance About Manny Cepeda Orchestra | Since 2018, the Manny Cepeda Orchestra has been featured on Pandora Radio and as Spotify Artists, and they were added to Apple Music and YouTube music in 2020. One of the most popular small groups of the Manny Cepeda Orchestra organization is the MCO Quartet, ranked as the No. 1 Salsa Quartet in San Diego. Since 2010 the group has played a series of public concerts, “Salsa Under the Stars,” which can now be heard at the Headquarters District at Seaport Village every third Friday of the month and Little Italy’s Piazza Della Famiglia on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Manny Cepeda, a Puerto Rican composer, arranger, and leader of the Manny Cepeda Orchestra, has just released a new CD, Roots/Raices and Padre Querido, featuring his original lyrics and musical arrangements. Manny drew on the early childhood teachings of his famous uncle Rafael Cepeda and dedicated this CD in his honor as well as paying tribute to his father, barber/musician Don Leonides Rivera. The core of Manny’s group is Xavier Quintero (San Diego), Andy Fraguela (Panama), and Henry “Kiko” Jimenez (Puerto Rico). Dance Lesson Led by Maria Caligagan| Maria Caligagan’s impressive artistic professional career spans over 45 years. Her early training started at the Boston School of Ballet. At just 18 years old she moved to New York City to follow her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Her first big break was being selected as an original cast member in Jerome Robbin’s Broadway, performing at the Tony Awards, and then being promoted to a principal role. Other performing credits include ABC’s movie Cinderella, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, as well as numerous TV commercials and industrials. As the Co-owner of Heatwave Productions, Event Entertainment and Salsa Inferno dance company, Maria has produced and directed hundreds of corporate events over the past 25 years. A choreographic highlight would be several productions with the Old Globe Theatre, including The Odyssey, The Taming of the Shrew, and Kingdom. In addition, Maria is a Senior Continuing Lecturer in the Theatre and Dance Department at UCSD with a teaching career of almost 30 years. Brightfeather is a dynamic and immersive violin-piano duo founded by violinist Benjamin Hoffman and pianist Irene Kim. Through deeply personal performances, Brightfeather is committed to bringing the light, hope, and strength of music to audiences across the globe. The duo has performed throughout the United States as well as in Europe, Asia, and Oceania, and presents repertoire spanning an extensive range of time periods and musical languages. Violinist Benjamin Hoffman has been heard across Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania, performing with artists such as Ani Kavafian, Wolfram Christ, Jorja Fleezanis, John Adams, and Gary Hoffman. He has appeared at Yellow Barn, Chamber Music Northwest, Aspen, the Ojai Music Festival, and Music Academy of the West, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Wiener Konzertverein, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Seoul Arts Center, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing. Hoffman is an enthusiastic concertmaster and has led much of the symphonic repertoire both with and without conductor. He has also performed as a guest musician with the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and the San Diego Symphony. He holds degrees from the Yale School of Music and Indiana University, studying with Ani Kavafian and Alexander Kerr. Pianist Irene Kim, a critically acclaimed prizewinner of international competitions, has performed across the globe in Europe, Asia, North America, and Australasia, appearing at venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Library of Congress. She is known for her versatility as an artist and for her powerful and authoritative performances, which range from the rare feat of performing Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto without a conductor to performing at Coachella alongside Danny Elfman. Continuously fascinated by the music and art of her contemporary surroundings, she works frequently with living composers and collaborates with visual artists and dancers. Her additional training as a conductor and piano technician informs her performance practice and instruction. She holds a doctorate from the Peabody Conservatory where she studied with Boris Slutsky, Benjamin Pasternack, and Leon Fleisher.

Professional storytellers from Storytellers of San Diego will facilitate and guide you through this process, with tips, strategies and small group structure so you can practice. We'll start with some general instruction and then break into smaller groups by specific interest. Our style of storytelling is up close without notes--Moth-style. A new generation takes mariachi to new heights when Latin GRAMMY nominee Mariachi Herencia de México presents Herederos (The Heirs). Simultaneously honoring the past, celebrating the present, and creating the future of mariachi music, Mariachi Herencia de México brings an unforgettable night of Mexican music and culture to The Conrad. Their bilingual repertoire blends genres like bolero, cumbia, tango, and swing with lyrics that speak of the Latino and immigrant identity. The group emerged in 2016 from a program in the Chicago Public Schools and has gone on to record five albums, with hits topping the Latin streaming charts. The historic tradition of mariachi music has its roots of origin in cities such as Guadalajara and Mexico City. As the ever-evolving genre’s influence spread, it reached Chicago and birthed the Mariachi Herencia de México. The energetic, virtuosic Latin GRAMMY-nominated group has issued chart-topping albums and performed across the North American continent. A powerhouse trio of acclaimed classical music performers! Piano superstar Jean-Yves Thibaudet, recognized as one of today’s finest pianists, has performed worldwide and recorded more than 50 albums. He is joined by Georgian-born German violin sensation Lisa Batiashvili and French cello phenom and multiple award winner Gautier Capuçon. Jean-Yves Thibaudet has performed worldwide, recorded more than 50 albums, and built a reputation as one of today’s finest pianists, delighting in music beyond the standard repertoire, from jazz to opera. His professional friendships crisscross the globe and have led to collaborations in film, fashion, and visual art. This season, Thibaudet continues his multi-season focus on Debussy’s Préludes, and will also perform several recitals and small-ensemble concerts with close friends and new collaborators, including Renée Fleming, Midori, Itzhak Perlman and Friends, and Michael Feinstein. He also appears as soloist in eight different pieces this season, performed with eleven orchestras. Thibaudet is the first-ever Artist-in-Residence at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. His extensive catalog has received two GRAMMY nominations, two ECHO Awards, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Diapason d’Or, the Edison Prize, and Gramophone awards, among others. He performs on the soundtracks of the films Wakefield, Atonement (Academy Award for Best Original Score), Pride and Prejudice, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, and The French Dispatch, and has a cameo in Bruce Beresford’s film about Alma Mahler, Bride of the Wind, in which his playing is showcased throughout. Among Thibaudet’s commendations is the Victoire d’Honneur, a lifetime career achievement award and the highest honor given by France’s Victoires de la Musique. He is also in the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and was named Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2012. Georgian-born German violinist Lisa Batiashvili is the Artistic Director of Audi Sommerkonzerte, Ingolstadt, and for the recent festival performed Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No.1 with Santtu-Matias Rouvali and the Münchner Philharmoniker. In 2022–23 she returned to the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and toured with Royal Concertgebouworkest, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Batiashvili regularly appears on stage with orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, London Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. Her latest album, Secret Love Letters with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Philadelphia Orchestra, was released in August 2022. She has won the MIDEM Classical Award, the Choc de l’année, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana International Prize, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival’s Leonard Bernstein Award, and the Beethoven-Ring. Batiashvili plays a Joseph Guarneri “del Gesu” from 1739, generously loaned by a private collector. Performing internationally with many of the world’s foremost conductors and instrumentalists, Gautier Capuçon is also a passionate ambassador for the Orchestre à l’École Association, which brings classical music to more than 40,000 school children across France. In January 2022 Capuçon launched his own Foundation to support young and talented musicians. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Capuçon brought music directly into the lives of families around France for free during his musical odyssey Un été en France. Capuçon performs an extensive array of works each season and regularly premieres new commissions. Current projects include collaborations with Lera Auerbach, Danny Elfman, and Thierry Escaich. Capuçon’s recordings have won multiple awards; his latest album, Sensations (2022), explores short pieces from a range of different genres. His album of romantic works by Brahms and Rachmaninoff in collaboration with Andreas Ottensammer and Yuja Wang was also released in 2022 by Deutsche Grammophon. 2020’s Warner Classics album Emotions features music from composers such as Debussy, Schubert, and Elgar and has achieved gold status in France.
