  • Join us for the annual Doctoral Research Colloquium on Friday, March 6! The colloquium features talks by UCSD Visual Arts PhD students along with a keynote lecture by a speaker who has influenced their practice, Professor Gerardo Aldana, from UC Santa Barbara. The Colloquium will be followed by a Reception and Screening for the collaborative exhibition in SME Gallery. Gerardo Aldana is a professor of Chicana/o Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research takes a history of science and indigenous studies approach to exploring Mayan hieroglyphic history, with a focus on astronomy. Throughout his research, for example in The Apotheosis of Janaab Pakal: Science, History and Religion at Classic Maya Palenque and Calculating Brilliance: an intellectual history of Mayan Astronomy at Chich’en Itza, he investigates cases of historically contingent invention and discovery within indigenous Mayan scientific practice. More recently, his research has led to further exploration of what he refers to as “oracular science” within ancient Mesoamerican astronomical practice. At the core of this exploration is a 14th century indigenous Mayan hieroglyphic manuscript comprising primarily divination almanacs and astronomical tables. • "A Must See!" – BroadwayWorld “The show is so moving it suspends us in belief she is still with us” – DC Theater Arts Written by multiple-Tony Award®-winning playwright Rupert Holmes Starring Michelle Azar as Ruth Bader Ginsburg Directed by: Laley Lippard Over the course of ninety fascinating and often funny minutes, the play presents an intimate portrayal of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a true American original. Holmes invites the audience into the intimacy of RGB’s life and her many trials: Losing her mother the day before she graduated as valedictorian of her Brooklyn high school, being one of only nine young women studying law at Harvard while also raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer, fighting for women's rights in the nineteen-seventies before condescending all-male courts...and taking courageous stands for human rights as a voice of reason amid a splintering and increasingly politicized Supreme Court. David Taylor of Dan’s Paper said of this production, “…a powerful teaching tool and an intellectually enriching production for the whole family.” “A uniquely intimate experience that’s absolutely worth exploring”, he continued. An evening with a great and compassionate icon of straight-thinking American justice emerges - an RBG who is not only “notorious” but victorious as she takes a stand for ordinary people facing the many challenges of a changing world. Holmes brilliantly captures RBG’s compelling life leaving no wonder why she became a cross-generational role model inspiring tens of millions of Americans and a world-wide following. • Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" takes us on a journey with an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents as they participate in the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. Content Disclaimer: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is not recommended for audiences under the age of 13. Content includes mature themes, adult language, sexual innuendos, and sensitive discussions about family, anxiety, puberty. Oceanside Theatre Company on Facebook / Instagram

  • This is a special screening in remembrance of the late Tom Noonan (1951-2026), accomplished actor, director, and writer for the stage and screen. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Screenwriting Award at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, WHAT HAPPENED WAS… is Tom Noonan’s directorial debut; a darkly humorous take on dating dread. Featuring powerhouse performances by Noonan and Karen Sillas as two lonely hearts spending one claustrophobic Friday night together in an imposing apartment, the film exposes with startling clarity the ways in which people struggle to connect. As relevant now as ever, O-Scope undertook a brand new 4K restoration from the film’s original 35mm negative and is making this pristine version widely available for the first time since the 90s.
