  • More than 120,000 Japanese Americans were detained and incarcerated during World War II without due process. We discuss the parallels between that period and present-day immigration enforcement, and what can be learned.
  • Watch Friday, Sept. 4, 2026 at 9:30 p.m. on KPBS 2 / Stream with YouTube (not in the KPBS+ app). Rudolfo Anaya was the first Hispanic American writer to achieve major publishing success with his landmark novel, "Bless Me, Ultima," in print since 1972. • The history of illuminated manuscripts is filled with beauty and intrigue. These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe, had painted embellishments and often utilized precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600, and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, upper class patrons supported the creation of private workshops that flourished primarily in French and Italian cities and their surrounding courts such as Bruges. One has only to look at the masterpiece, "Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc De Berry" by the noted Limbourg Brothers, to understand how amazing and prized these handmade books became. By 1440 however, their popularity began to diminish with the ability to mass produce books with the advent of the printing press. In this docent-led virtual talk, important manuscripts will be discussed along with their influence on the art of the late Medieval and early Renaissance. Timken Museum of Art on Facebook / Instagram

  • Grand opera is coming to the California Center for the Arts in Escondido in July! Giacomo Puccini’s one-act masterpiece "Il Tabarro", Italian for "The Cloak", is a dramatic story of love, jealousy, and betrayal. Set aboard a river barge in Paris at the turn of the century, the soul-stirring melodies will transport you to a foggy night of deception and death. "Il Tabarro" is the least-performed of the three operas in Puccini’s triple-bill Il Trittico (The Triptych). While companies frequently mount double bills of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, they usually overlook "Il Tabarro", the first opera Puccini composed in the trio. In just one hour, you’ll be spellbound by the beauty and power of this music, whether you’re a devoted opera fan or a first-timer. That’s just half of the program, though. After the intermission, you’ll see the same story told in a completely different way: through neoclassical ballet. Featuring original choreography, this brand new adaptation of "Il Tabarro" reverses the narrative as the characters are now silent, speaking only through mesmerizingly expressive movements. This time, you’ll hear the same amazing orchestrations but without any vocal parts. Cinballera’s founders, dramatic coloratura soprano Tiffany Brannan and prima ballerina Rebekah Brannan, will be trading off as the leading lady in the opera and ballet, leading a talented cast of international performers and local professionals. "Il Tabarro" is presented in collaboration with the Temecula Valley Symphony, with Maestro John Mario Di Costanzo conducting. This production is Cinballera’s Season 4 opener, marking the 3-year anniversary of the company’s first performance in July 2023!
