Join us for an evening of fresh insight and cinematic exploration with Professor Daisuke Miyao as we celebrate his newest book, "Ozu and the Ethics of Indeterminacy." A leading scholar of Japanese cinema, Chair of the Department of Literature, and fellow of the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UC San Diego, Professor Miyao invites audiences to reconsider how films create meaning. Drawing on carefully curated clips from the work of Yasujirō Ozu, his talk examines how cinema can resist singular interpretation, opening instead onto multiple perspectives and modes of experience. What does it mean to watch a film without a fixed point of view? How do images shape not only what we see, but how we understand the world? Through the concept of an “ethics of indeterminacy,” Miyao offers a nuanced and timely framework for engaging with cinema in all its complexity. The presentation will be followed by a moderated Q&A, offering an opportunity for deeper conversation and engagement with Professor Miyao’s work. This event also marks a significant moment in Professor Miyao’s scholarly career, celebrating the publication of two major books in close succession—an achievement that underscores his dynamic contributions to the field of film studies. Gus Fink Studios and The Tipsy Crow (770 Fifth Ave.) today announced a Comic-Con collaboration naming the historic three-story Gaslamp Quarter bar the official home base of "The Kreepy Crossing," a free public art treasure hunt and live painting event on Friday, July 24, from 4 to 8 PM. Throughout the afternoon, eleven original Gus Fink paintings will be hidden across historic Gaslamp landmarks, with clues dropping every 20 minutes to a large social audience of followers — free to find, and finders keepers! Fink, creator of the Kreepy Cuddles character line carried nationally at Spencer’s, and Spirit Halloween, will paint live at an easel at The Tipsy Crow all evening before revealing a new character at 8 p.m. The reveal is followed by a giveaway of 100 free SDCC exclusive collectibles and a drawing for $500 in prizes. The event is open to everyone — no Comic-Con badge needed. To mark the partnership, The Tipsy Crow’s bar team will debut “Sid’s Night Watch” an exclusive cocktail inspired by the fan favorite Kreepy Cuddles character Sid, a onetime nightmare re-imagined as a protective guardian. What is a Dirty Cello? Find out at New Village Arts in Carlsbad on April 18. The band Dirty Cello is a globe trotting band that performs blues, rock and Americana, all fronted by virtuoso cellist Rebecca Roudman. A classically trained symphony player, Roudman dropped the straight- jacket of classical music years ago and hasn’t looked back since. “We travel all over the place,” says Roudman, “and everywhere we go, the idea is to put on a high energy show. We’re a rock band, but with a cello instead of a lead guitar.” The Dirty Cello band really does get around - with shows from Iceland, to China, to a Santa Cruz nudist resort. The band will be performing for the first time at the New Village Arts in Carlsbad on April 18 for a special afternoon show. Among their many descriptions, Oakland Magazine describes the group as, "Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic, and textured, and only occasionally classical." Roudman agrees with this description and adds, “We’re all about the fun at our shows and we step on stage with only a vague plan as to what specific songs we are going to play, and we react to what the audience wants to hear and adjust accordingly.” With a set list ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Charlie Daniels to rocking original songs, the band can deliver on this promise. Zarzuela comes to San Diego! A passionate beauty sways the hearts and political leanings of two men as Spain is torn between monarchy and revolution in Federico Moreno Torroba’s “Luisa Fernanda.” This fiery yet romantic drama is a great example of Zarzuela, a unique Spanish art form incorporating classical singing as well as spoken words to tell stories of the people. “Luisa Fernanda” was written in 1932, and it has been one of the most beloved Zarzuelas ever since. Cinballera Entertainment is honoring San Diego’s rich Hispanic history by performing this Zarzuela in concert at the beautiful Villa Montezuma. The production will be performed in costume and with as much staging as possible in the intimate setting of the Villa. Cinballera’s Season 3 finale also honors its founders’ operatic history.
