Accelerating Evolution to Create New Medicines – Front Row lecture with Christian Diercks, PhD Biologic drugs account for about a quarter of recent drug approvals, and most are antibodies. Although antibodies have transformed treatment for many conditions, they mainly work by binding to their targets. But some diseases may benefit more from therapeutics that can selectively alter those targets instead. In this free Front Row lecture, Assistant Professor Christian Diercks will discuss how he harnesses accelerated evolution—a laboratory process that speeds up cycles of genetic change and selection—to engineer therapeutic enzymes that actively break down or modify disease-related molecules. At the center of this work is T7-ORACLE, a synthetic biology platform developed by Diercks’ lab. It continuously introduces mutations into selected genes in bacteria to rapidly evolve proteins, including enzymes, at large scale with minimal researcher intervention. The Diercks lab is using T7-ORACLE to evolve enzymes for the selective degradation of the painful crystals behind gout flares, and to target voltage-gated ion channels involved in chronic pain as a non-addictive alternative to opioid-based therapeutics. The County of San Diego (County) Planning & Development Services (PDS) invites you to attend a virtual Open House for the Tiered Winery Rural Residential (RR) Expansion project. Staff will present proposed zoning ordinance updates, review key public feedback received during the draft review period, and share how that feedback shaped the final draft. Draft zoning ordinance amendments were available for public review from July 7 to August 6, 2026. These amendments addressed the Board of Supervisors (Board) 2024 direction to explore allowing smaller winery tiers in RR zones. The draft ordinance amendments also incorporate revisions in response to 2026 Board direction to review the 30% criteria for designated tasting and retail sales area to provide greater flexibility for outdoor spaces and to reassess how outdoor amplified live music is assessed for compliance with the County’s Noise Ordinance. Other proposed changes include, but are not limited to; • Proposed standards to allow a by-right pathway for Boutique Wineries in RR zones. • Provisions allowing a temporary waiver of the grape sourcing requirements in the event of a natural disaster causing crop failure. • Allowing vehicles with an occupancy greater than 15 people to serve a Boutique Winery during special, closed-to-the-public activities to ensure occupancy is not exceeded. • Allowances for informal seating in outdoor areas. This project includes updates to the Tiered Winery Zoning Ordinance (Section 6910), new and revised operating standards, and a review of potential environmental effects under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Open House Topic: Proposed Final Draft Zoning Ordinance Changes Staff will present the final draft zoning ordinance changes planned for Planning Commission and Board consideration later this year. Navigating Culture, Language, & Preforming Arts in Disney's Live Action 'Moana' The release of Disney’s live-action "Moana" film involved local expertise and talent from CSUSM and our surrounding area in San Diego and greater Southern California. Audiences will learn about the making of the film through the perspectives of the Oceanic Cultural Trust, a group created by the film company to serve as cultural consultants on Oceanic language and performing arts. CSUSM faculty Dr. Grant Muagututi’a served as the lead cultural consultant for the film. His work focuses on the need for Oceanic language conservation efforts through mainstream popular media, independent documentary film, community partnership programming, and in higher education institutions both locally and abroad. He, along with others involved in the film, will offer reflections on their specific roles in making the live-action film. Members of the Oceanic Cultural Trust and actors from the film will engage audiences with behind-the-scenes stories and live-action musical and dance performances exclusively for CSUSM to inspire everyone to reimagine how grassroots cultural arts education can shape more inclusive experiences of higher education and impact popular media representations.
