  • "Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" examines the legacy of Japanese American incarceration during WWII through the lens of the Garden of Remembrance (2000 - 2002), a permanent public art memorial created by Ruth Asawa and others on San Francisco State University’s campus, honoring the resilience of this community. The artworks in the exhibition range from traditional to experimental in various media and explore ancestry, family histories, lived experiences, and painful memories resulting from Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The exhibition includes Mark Baugh-Sasaki, Ruka Kashiwagi, Paul Kitagaki Jr., emerita professor Wendy Maruyama, Lisa Solomon and TT Takemoto. "Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" is co-organized by the SDSU Art Galleries and San Francisco State University’s Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibition is co-curated by Fine Arts Gallery Director Sharon E. Bliss and SFSU Lecturer in Art and Curator for the Fine Arts Gallery Kevin B. Chen. Major support for this exhibition has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support from the Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.   • The San Diego Excursion is a repeat of the 1915 San Diego Road Race Centennial Celebration. Please join us on January 12th from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. to see over 50 vintage cars driving through Bankers Hill and Mission Hills as they travel to Point Loma to reenact the route used in the 1915 Point Loma road race, which was put on in conjunction with the start of the Panama-California. We'll leave the Automotive Museum in Balboa Park at 9AM and travel along the streets shown on the attached map. We’d love to wave and honk our old horns as a way of saying thanks for coming out to view the cars go by. You can stage anywhere along the route shown on the attached flier.   • Downtown’s The Whiskey House, which holds the Guinness World Record for Most Variety of Whiskeys Available, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a Roaring 20s-themed party on Wednesday, January 15 that includes complimentary food for all guests. The festivities begin with a food buffet from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. featuring sliders, wings, chorizo mac ‘n cheese, veggie egg rolls, caprese skewers, veggie platters, chips and guacamole, and dessert platters.   • St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center will host its 46th Annual Haute with Heart Fashion Show, with the theme “Couture,” paying homage to one of the fashion capitals of the world, Paris. Inspired by a piece from artist and SMSC student Mark Rimland, guests will be taking a day trip to the City of Love. Attendees will be greeted by live Parisian inspired music, fabulous boutique shopping, a silent auction, and free flowing champagne. Once the ballroom doors open, all messieurs and madames will enjoy a delicious Parisian inspired luncheon, special up-lifting performances by SMSC students, live auction, and a one-of-a-kind fashion show produced by the talented Kristi Brooks, who has worked with top designers and styled celebrities around the globe. SMSC is a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. All funds raised will benefit the organization's nationally recognized innovative programs, where they combine the culture of care and creativity within quality programs to provide liberal arts education, practical skills development, employment, and dignity for a lifetime. SMSC allows students to develop creative outlets, learn marketable skills, and gain a sense of independence and self-esteem. Over 400 students attend SMSC, ranging from recent high school graduates to seniors in their eighties. This year’s event will honor John Seiber and have Charles and Maureen King as the Honorary Chairs. The Host Chairs are Sean and Karen Mercadante.
