About the Presenter: Mike Thacker is a retired Senior Staff Research and Development Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He has a B.S. in zoology from San Diego State University and studied anthropology and archaeology at University of California Santa Barbara, Palomar College, and San Diego State University. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees for the San Diego Archaeological Center and is a volunteer teaching assistant for Palomar College archaeological excavation field school and survey programs. Mike is passionate about his home of San Diego and leads interpretive hikes for the San Dieguito River Park and San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. Explore Handbuilding with Clay! Friday, June 26, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Ages 12+ welcome! Join us for a fun, hands-on introduction to handbuilding with clay! In this workshop, you’ll explore a hand-building technique called ‘pinching’ to create a small vessel or plant pot, perfectly-sized for succulents or herbs. This beginner-friendly project focuses on forming pots using just your hands—no tools or wheels needed! You’ll learn how to shape, smooth, and personalize your pot while enjoying a relaxed, creative time. And, when you’ve completed your project, each student will choose from a variety of glazes for the piece to finished in. It’s a great way to get your hands dirty and your creativity flowing while making something ready for use (after it’s been fired)! Grab a friend, enjoy some clay therapy, and discover the joy of crafting with clay!
