Art Scene West presents the 3rd Annual San Diego's Finest Art Show, opening at its Seaport Village gallery on Saturday, September 5, from 5–7 p.m. The exhibition is curated by gallery owner Joshua Rios and judged by acclaimed professional artist and San Diego native Christopher Paluso. Six selected artists will receive prestigious ribbons, with cash prizes awarded to the top three placements during the reception. The show features an eclectic mix of styles and subjects, from bold abstract compositions to finely rendered figurative and landscape works, showcasing the range and talent of San Diego's contemporary art scene. The event is free and open to the public, offering a firsthand look at the showcase, the chance to meet participating artists, and the opportunity to purchase original works to bring home. We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we honor the rich traditions and share in the experience of Día de los Muertos on Sunday, November 1 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station located in Point Loma! Stop by anytime during the day to join in the fun! Rooted in community, family, and remembrance, this event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. Through music, art, hands-on and interactive activities, we invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly gathering designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community. We’ll be decorating calavera (skull) cookies in the morning. Then, we’ll enjoy music making and festivities before a procession set to begin at 1:30 p.m. Join us as we walk together through the Dorothea Laub and Dance Place Buildings. We’ll enjoy the art, music making, and handmade shrines made by local community members and students! At its center is "Shift," a virtuosic trombone concerto by Composer in Residence Jimmy López. Performed by Jörgen van Rijen and co commissioned by the San Diego, Rotterdam, and San Francisco symphonies, the four movement work explores the elements – Sound, Water, Light and Sonoluminescence, where vibrating sound waves create bubbles that glow with light. Debussy’s "Nocturnes" evokes atmospheric scenes inspired by Whistler’s paintings: drifting Clouds and festive Celebrations. Ravel’s dazzling "Alborada del Gracioso," steeped in Spanish flair, radiates rhythm and wit, while his earlier "Rapsodie espagnole" sways between habanera languor and fiery malagueña energy. Poulenc’s "Les biches" (The Does) suite captures 1920s Paris at its most spirited – modern women at play, love affairs, and cocktails in chic salons, animated by jazzy exuberance and sly humor. Together these works celebrate French imagination in all its forms – mystery and sunlight, elegance and daring – culminating in a concert that bridges impressionist beauty, modern brilliance, and vibrant contemporary sound.
