From May 13–16, 36 accordionists from across the United States will gather in San Diego for a 4-day collaborative music event culminating in a public performance on Saturday, May 16 at 2 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Community Center in El Cajon. The final concert, the San Diego Accordion Extravaganza, features a large ensemble of musicians who have rehearsed virtually for six months before coming together in person. The program includes music from film and swing classics as well as orchestral works, aiming to challenge perceptions of the accordion in modern music. International touring duo Squeeze Play (Kim and Dan Christian) will headline the event. “This is the accordion unleashed—explosive, virtuosic, and powerful enough to sound like a full orchestra and a swinging big band.”

Ekphrastic writing has been described as “taking the visual and transforming it to the verbal.” This form of writing, used for centuries, encourages writers to use visual art as a muse for putting words to paper. In this highly generative, immersive workshop, participants will engage with imaginative writing prompts, exploring the use of images as a source of inspiration for creativity. This generative, interactive session will cover numerous ways on how visual art can be a wellspring for new projects and a way to infuse current projects with energy and excitement. We’ll experience the various forms ekphrastic writing can take, using our own unique perspectives to create fresh narratives. The workshop will include a taste of SoulCollage®, an expressive arts method, through which we’ll create and write from our own images. (No artistic background required.) Participants will have the opportunity to share their work and receive positive, uplifting feedback, and they’ll leave with several short pieces they may wish to develop further. Retro Tapestry Weaving 4 weeks | Instructor Lauren Becker Downey Learn to weave! Explore the ins and outs of weaving including proper terminology and methods, how to read weaving drafts and where to buy weaving yarn. Practice plain weave, twills, tapestry, sumac, fringe making and more. Weave traditionally and create four richly textured and tactile samplers of fiber art. This class is designed to focus on learned skills rather than a final product. By the end of this class, you will have the confidence and the skills to weave just about anything on any size or type of loom. A frame loom will be built for you, learn to warp it and practice about a dozen basic weaving techniques. What you learn and practice in this class will equip you with life-long skills to enable you to weave on any loom of any size on your own. There will be homework and the loom is yours to keep. If you already know how to weave, tighten up your skills with more advanced work. Be the envy of all your friends when they see your handcrafted work.
