Traditionally, on Rosh Hashanah, Jews gather at bodies of water for Tashlich, symbolically casting off sins into the water to start the New Year renewed. For Reverse Tashlich, we join thousands of volunteers worldwide to combine tradition with action: we'll gather to cast off sins using stones, and then work together to remove real marine debris and pollution from Mission Bay. What if you reached a point where living no longer reflected your values, but you did not qualify for Medical Aid in Dying? Many people are surprised to learn there is another legal end of life option called Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED). VSED is a deeply personal decision in which a mentally capable person chooses to stop eating and drinking in order to allow a natural death. While the decision belongs entirely to the individual, proper planning, medical oversight, hospice involvement, and compassionate support help make the experience as peaceful and comfortable as possible. Join the Hemlock Society of San Diego for an informative discussion exploring the medical, practical, emotional, and family aspects of VSED. Whether you are planning ahead, supporting someone with a serious illness, or simply want to understand all of your legal end of life options, this program offers thoughtful education in a respectful and compassionate environment. Meet Our Speakers Laura Carroll Laura will share the personal story of supporting her 86 year old father as he chose VSED. Working together with his physician, hospice team, and concierge nursing support, her family helped honor his wishes while creating a peaceful and meaningful final chapter. Dr. Brian Graham Medical Director, TopKare Hospice Dr. Graham will explain the medical considerations, hospice support, symptom management, and clinical care involved throughout the VSED process. Learn to needle felt! Saturday, June 27, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Ages 12+years welcome! A flash of emerald, a blur of wings — the hummingbird is nature’s tiny miracle! In this 3-hour workshop, we will work together to capture that fleeting magic in wool. Using natural roving and needle felting techniques, you’ll build up layers of colored wool to bring your hummingbird to life, and ready to hang — all jewel-toned and hovering wings…all it takes is patience, a little wonder, and a lot of wool. No two birds will be the same! Felting needle safety will be included for use, with finger guards provided. Timed with the anticipated return of NASA’s Artemis II mission, this immersive event invites families to witness the dramatic splashdown of the Orion capsule—expected just off the coast of San Diego—and celebrate humanity’s next step toward the Moon. Experience Spaceflight in Real Time Guests will gather in the Museum’s Pavilion of Flight at least one hour prior to splashdown to watch the live broadcast of Orion’s return to Earth on a massive LED screen. Follow along as the capsule re-enters the atmosphere, deploys parachutes, and splashes down—marking a historic milestone in human space exploration.
