President Barack Obama has nominated Marine Corps Maj. Gen. David H. Berger to become the next commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton. Berger is currently the commanding general of Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms.

Command Sgt. Maj. Martin R Barreras, 49, who served 22 years as an Army Ranger, died May 13 in Texas from wounds he suffered in Afghanistan. Barreras was involved in the rescue of Jessica Lynch from an Iraqi hospital in 2003.

Fred Phelps, controversial leader of a church best known for picketing military funerals, has died at the age of 84. The father of a fallen Twentynine Palms Marine whose lawsuit against the Westboro Baptist Church made its way to the Supreme Court has said he hopes Phelps is "buried in peace."
