The daily, often gruesome, activities of the militant group calling itself the Islamic State remain headline news.
The group's advance into Iraq, has brought the world's attention back to that war-torn country.
A personal history essay published in U-T San Diego is reminding us of the history of the U.S. conflict in Iraq, as witnessed by one journalist. Gretel Kovach has covered the Iraq war, starting before the U.S. invasion in 2003, and since 2010 has been a military affairs reporter for U-T San Diego. She has traveled to Afghanistan five times to cover the U.S. Marines there.
Kovach is a three-time recipient of national journalism awards from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. This year she received the Semper Fidelis award from the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, for bringing the Marine Corps story home from the war zone to San Diego.
