Maj. Gen. Berger Tapped To Command I MEF At Camp Pendleton

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Marine Corps Maj. Gen. David H. Berger has been nominated for a third star and assignment as commander of the I Marine Expeditionary Force, which is based at Camp Pendleton.

Berger will succeed Lt. Gen. John A. Toolan as commander of the I MEF.

The nomination includes a promotion for Berger to the rank of lieutenant general.

Berger is currently the commanding general of Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms.

According to Marine Corps Times, Berger has commanded Marines in a variety of locations, like Haiti, Fallujah in Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Berger's official biography shows him to have quite the education resume. He earned a B.S. in Engineering from Tulane University, a Master of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a M.S. in Military Studies.

His formal military education includes the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Advanced Course, U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and U.S. Marine Corps School of Advanced Warfighting.

He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School, Jumpmaster School, U.S. Navy Dive School, and U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious Reconnaissance School.
Stars and Stripes reports the U.S. Senate must confirm Berger’s promotion to the rank of lieutenant general and appointment as commander of I MEF.
