Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Marine Corps Maj. Gen. David H. Berger has been nominated for a third star and assignment as commander of the I Marine Expeditionary Force, which is based at Camp Pendleton.
Berger will succeed Lt. Gen. John A. Toolan as commander of the I MEF.
The nomination includes a promotion for Berger to the rank of lieutenant general.
Berger is currently the commanding general of Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms.
According to Marine Corps Times, Berger has commanded Marines in a variety of locations, like Haiti, Fallujah in Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Berger's official biography shows him to have quite the education resume. He earned a B.S. in Engineering from Tulane University, a Master of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a M.S. in Military Studies.
