'Everyone’s a math person’: How an Oceanside school is making math class welcoming for all
The Oceanside Unified School District adopted a new math curriculum two years ago. It emphasizes giving students a chance to participate and collaborate.
“They need an invitation to math,” said Reuben Medlock, a teacher in the district who works with other math teachers to implement the curriculum. “You're building a culture in your classroom so that students feel welcome.”
KPBS education reporter Katie Anastas visited a 1st grade classroom at Del Rio STEM Academy to see how teachers are bringing joy and belonging to math class.
