One of San Diego’s local theater directors won a national grant and is heading to Washington DC. KPBS arts reporter Angela Carone says the grant comes with $75,000 and the chance to learn from a theater veteran.
Seema Sueko of Mo’olelo Performing Arts Company was one of six winners from a pool of 500 national applicants for a new leadership grant awarded by Theater Communications Group, the national organization for nonprofit American theater. Sueko is the artistic director and co-founder of Mo’olelo.
Sueko will spend 16 months under the mentorship of Molly Smith, the acclaimed artistic director of Arena Theater in Washington DC.
The goal of the grant program is to develop the future leaders in theater.
Sueko says the opportunity comes at just the right time for her. “I’ve now been running Mo’olelo for eight years and I do feel like I’ve hit a ceiling of what I know to do. And I can use inspiration and can use getting shaken up and thrown in a new environment and learn some new things.
While Sueko is in Washington through 2013. An interim managing director will be hired to help run Mo’olelo in her absence.
