The USS Freedom is slated to depart from her homeport of San Diego today on her maiden deployment.
The USS Freedom is the Navy's first Littoral Combat Ship:
LCS ships are designed to employ mission packages that address capability gaps in the areas of surface warfare, mine countermeasures, and anti-submarine warfare. Due to its modular design, each LCS ship can be reconfigured to perform one of those three distinct missions in a short period of time.
According to a Navy news release, the ship will leave San Diego for Singapore, and spend eight months there...
...conducting maritime security operations (and participating) in international exhibitions and exercises to highlight U.S. strategic intent in the region.
