The results of what's called "The Nation's Report Card" are out Thursday. The assessment looks at student achievement in eleven urban districts throughout the country including San Diego City Schools. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.

Fourth and Eighth graders in the participating districts were tested in reading and math.

Peter Bell of San Diego City Schools says compared to other urban districts, San Diego is in the middle of the pack. He says in looking for improvement, city schools performed about the same in reading as it did the prior year.

Bell: "On the other hand, in math, we saw significant gain improvement from 2003, in both fourth and the eighth grades."

State superintendent Jack O'Connell warns that because districts in other states exclude a much higher percentage of students learning English from the test than San Diego And LA do, it's important not to make direct comparisons with these districts. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS news.
