San Diego County has dropped its lawsuit in federal court challenging California's medical marijuana law. The County has instead refilled the suit in state court. And it's filed a separate legal action against a local group, which has threatened to sue the County over its refusal to issue I-D cards to medical marijuana patients. San Diego County officials say they just want to consolidate all of their lawsuits in one court. And they maintain their legal arguments remain strong. The County contends federal laws that ban marijuana use trump California's law that allows it for medical purposes.
Kevin Keenan is executive director of the local chapter of the ACLU. He says the County needs to give it up.
They're digging a hole, and now they're gonna dig it even deeper. They should just throw away the shovel, climb out, and help people who are seriously ill get the treatment they need.
County Supervisors claim their personal views against marijuana have nothing to do with their legal challenges. Critics don't buy it, and say the County is just wasting time and money. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
