Problems still plague Medicare

Pharmacists say they're still feeling the pain from the new Medicare prescription drug program. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

Pharmacists say they're still feeling the pain from the new Medicare prescription drug program. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

Medicare officials say they've been working to fix enrollment and other problems that have hampered the new Part D program. Even so, pharmacists complain it's taking longer to get paid under the new plans, and they're making less than they used to for selling the same drugs.

Mike Negrette is with the California Pharmacists Association.

Negrette: "From the pharmacies I've talked to, done some quick calculations, on average they're getting you know five to ten dollars less per prescription under Part D than they were under Medi-Cal. And that's having a big impact on their financial liability."

Negrette says independent pharmacists are having an especially hard time. Medicare officials say the marketplace will eventually self-correct.
