Animal protection groups want consumers to boycott pet products made in China. Members of the California-based group In Defense of Animals will gather Saturday at the Global Pet Expo in San Diego to protest Chinese pet products. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

In Defense of Animals spokesman Bill Dyer says the group wants to alert buyers at the Pet Expo about the cruel trade in dog and cat fur in China. He says recent video evidence showing puppies being tortured in China is the reason for the boycott. Dyer says many fur products from China are purposely mislabeled as synthetic.

Dyer: "It is illegal to import cat and dog fur from China into the United States, but it comes in anyway because they mislabel it and any items, any fur items under $150 dollars do not have to be labeled. So a lot of the people who buy this they think that perhaps it's fake fur but in many cases it is not it's cats and dogs or in some cases it's rabbit."

The group also wants pet store owners to avoid stocking Chinese pet products.
