San Diego's Fire chief is stepping down. Jeff Bowman submitted his letter of resignation Tuesday morning. He says he's leaving the department because San Diego's ongoing fiscal problems will notallow the city to properly finance the fire department.

Bowman: Frankly I think I've done everything I can do to help the city of San Diego as its fire chief. And I wish the mayor and his new staff the best of luck. He's one of the best bosses I've ever had. I'm just ready to retire.

Bowman has been the San Diego fire chief since 2002. A spokesman for Mayor Jerry Sanders say the city's top politician is sorry to see Bowman leave. Spokesman Fred Sainz says Bowman's departure is a big loss.
