Both Democratic candidates for governor say they support the idea of universal health insurance.

State Treasurer Phil Angelides says if elected, he'd immediately give health coverage to all California children. State Controller Steve Westly says he's like to require businesses to cover their employees.

Jamie Court is with the non-profit Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights. He thinks it's all talk.

Court: I believe that nothing's gonna happen out of Sacramento, from a new governor, from the same old legislature or a new legislature. The only way we're gonna get change in health insurance is if we go to the ballot.

Court says politicians promise action on health insurance. But he says when they get elected, they're usually unwilling to take on the powerful health insurance lobby. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
