A batch of new schools is under construction this week in the San Diego Unified School District. Officials say the campuses will help to alleviate overcrowding in the inner city. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Eight schools are under construction - a high school, a middle school and six elementary schools. Most of them are located in City Heights and Barrio Logan. There is an enrollment decline in San Diego, so one might wonder why so many schools are under construction. Deputy facilities officer Dave Umstot says there are empty seats in schools. The problem is the schools aren't located in the inner city.
Rather than busing the kids to the available seats, the intent of the district to is establish community schools, which is defined as a school where kids can physically walk to school
It costs $449 million to build the eight facilites. The district will break ground on its ninth school later this month. Funding comes from Proposition M-M, a $1.5 billion school bond. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
