San Diego County supervisors are considering tighter restrictions on sex offenders this week. A proposed ordinance would forbid sex offenders from loitering around children. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps reports.
California voters overwhelmingly approved Prop. 83, or Jessica’s Law. It puts limits on where sex offenders can live. But County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Greg Cox want to control where sex offenders hang out. This week the county supervisors vote on whether to ban child predators from loitering within 300 feet of schools and parks. Several cities in San Diego County already have similar measures. The ordinance would affect more than 4,000 registered sex offenders countywide.
The county is also taking up a proposal to monitor people convicted of drunken driving. DUI offenders would have to wear an alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet. Local law enforcement is exploring the technology, which officials say is already used in 20 states. For KPBS, I’m Andrew Phelps.
